HUDSON FALLS – Florence “Ma” Crandall, 94, of Main Street, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2019.

Born on March 18, 1925, in the town of Hebron, she was the daughter of the late Ernest G. and Laura (Johnson) Hurley.

On December 23, 1942, Ma married Howard W. Crandall at the United Methodist Church of Hudson Falls.  He passed away on January 28, 1992, after almost 50 years of marriage. 

Following her marriage, Ma and Howard ran a dairy farm in Hartford for many years.   After selling the farm, Ma started a business cleaning homes and camps on Lake George.   She worked in the cleaning business until securing a job as a nurse’s aide at Pleasant Valley Infirmary.   Ma loved her job at PVI, partly because even as a young girl, she wanted to be a nurse.   She found her niche and stayed at PVI for over 25 years, retiring on November 22, 1992.  Two years later, Ma moved to her current address above the Carleton Funeral Home and became part of their family.  

She was active throughout her life.

Ma was a lifetime member of the Adirondack Fiddlers and a member of the Country Round & Square Dance Association, formerly the Dick Ladd Square Dance Association.  She loved spending time with her friends on the Tuesday Senior and the Friday Senior Bowling Leagues.  Even occasionally having her name printed in the paper for her score.   Ma also belonged to the Fort Edward/Hudson Falls Senior Citizen Group and enjoyed sharing trips to the casinos and on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad.

Her faith and especially her church, the Hartford United Methodist Church was very close to her heart.  She enjoyed the Sunday Service and also all the wonderful dinners prepared by the church congregation.

Besides her husband, Ma was predeceased by her 6 week old son, Arthur Howard Crandall, her daughter, Carolyn Wells, who passed away in 1995 and her son Daniel Crandall, who passed away in 2018 and her brother, Donald Hurley and her sisters, Verna Hoyt and Rita (Rathbun) Todd.

Survivors include her daughters, Joan Brown and her husband, Norman of Fort Edward, Joyce Wilcox and her husband, Wayne of Adamsville and Eleanor Johnson and her husband, Richard of Adirondack; nineteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren; several great, great grandchildren; her daughter in law, Betty Crandall of Glens Falls; her sisters, Carrie Dunbar of Corinth, Anna Mae Andrews of Granville and Martha Osser of Granville; her two brothers, Gordon Hurley and his wife, Norma of Granville and FL and Raymond Hurley and his wife, Doris of Hudson Falls and FL; her sister in law, JoAnne Hurley;  and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family will greet friends on Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Funeral Services will follow the calling hours on Monday at 1 p.m. Reverend Patti Girard, officiating.

Burial will follow at Morningside Cemetery.

Ballston Spa — Kenneth L. Mingo, Jr., 67, passed away unexpectedly from health complications on Sunday, October 17, 2018, at Saratoga Hospital.

Born on February 18, 1951, in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late

Kenneth L. Sr. and Mary Jane (Harris) Mingo.

He retired from New York Corrections, working in Albany as an Information Tech Specialist. Kenneth loved listening to, playing, and writing music. He was a very talented acoustic and electric guitarist. Kenneth was known for playing his songs on Virtual World and on his YouTube channel Bronze8020. In addition to music, Kenneth was an avid hunter and fishermen. He loved spending time with his family, who will miss his witty sense of humor. Kenneth often said “children are a blessing” and enjoyed helping his sister, Jacqueline with her day care. Kenneth will be remembered for his music, love of family and great strength. His family guidance, and solid advice will be missed by all.

Kenneth is survived by his sister, Jacqueline A. Ruff of Ballston Spa; and his nieces and nephews, Joe Ruff, his wife Tami and their children, Chrystal Emery, her husband Fred and their children, Mary Lou Jackson, her husband Jeff and their children, Kenneth Ruff, his wife Sophie and their children, and his Son Christopher Mingo, his wife, Carissa and their child Reghan of Chicago.

Graveside services will 11 on Saturday, July 27, 2019, at Moss Street Cemetery in the Town of Kingsbury.

HUDSON FALLS – Raymond “Ray” V. Howard, Jr., 46, passed away surrounded by his loving family and friends, on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at the Glens Falls Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on November 29, 1972, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Mary (Spirowski) Parker and Raymond V. Howard, Sr.

Ray was a 1990 graduate of Hudson Falls High School. He was a past member of the Kingsbury Volunteer Fire Company and worked for Umicore on Pruyn Island as a machine operator.

Ray loved the outdoors, including camping, hunting and wolves.  He was an avid reader and history buff.  He also enjoyed photography and shooting darts.  Ray was a loyal Pittsburgh Steelers and NASCAR fan.  He enjoyed an iced cold Diet Pepsi and Jack Daniels.

Most of all, Ray loved spending time with his family, his daughter Katie, his brothers Brian and Bob and his countless cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was predeceased by his sister, Jill Ann Parker Ward and his grandparents, Chester and Elizabeth Spirowski and Clifton and Cora Howard, Sr. and several aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his daughter, Kathleen “Katie” Jill Howard of Florida; his parents, Mary (Maynard) Parker of Hudson Falls and Raymond (Janine) Howard, Sr. of Hudson Falls; his brothers, JR Parker of South Carolina, Brian J. (Meghan) Howard, his beloved niece, Mia of Queensbury and Bob (Amanda) Howard of Queensbury; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and too many close friends to name.

Calling hours will be on Friday, July 19, 2019, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.  A prayer will be said for Ray at 7 p.m.

Ray’s family would like to thank Dr. Giotti-Grubbs, Dr. Coppens and all the nurses and staff at the Glens Falls Hospital Tower 2 for all their care and compassion.

GLENS FALLS – Audrey Jane (Prevost) Steenken, 79, formerly of Glens Falls, went to be with her husband, brother, parents and fur babies, on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on February 21, 1940, in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Sarah J. (Drake) Prevost.

On April 17, 1960, she married Edward Reid Steenken at St. Alphonsus Church in Glens Falls.  They were married for 29 years before he passed away in 1989.

After she received her high school diploma, Audrey continued her education, focusing on Special Education.    After raising her children and the neighborhood kids, she went back to work.  Audrey was proud to be to have been a special education teaching assistant at BOCES for several years.

Audrey and her family were active communicants of St. Alphonsus Church, where her children attended school and also where they were married.

She loved bingo and bowling years ago in a league.  Audrey also looked forward to Stewarts Chocolate Milkshakes, 5^th Avenue Candy Bars and iced cold Pepsi.  She enjoyed playing backgammon and cards with her children and grandchildren.  Audrey was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.  She was also fascinated by Bengal Tigers and accumulated a beautiful collection of them.  Audrey loved eating Pizza Hut or KFC.

She was outspoken and went right to the point with her honest opinion.  Audrey will be remembered for her keen sense of humor.  After her retirement, she was very private, spending time with her children and grandchildren, until she became a resident of Slate Valley. There, she blossomed and enjoyed the other residents and the staff.  She found purpose there, becoming an advocate for the residents.  

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Gary Prevost.

Audrey is survived by her four children, Sandra Lebrun and her husband, David, Sr. of Fort Edward, Gary Stenken and his wife, Jennifer of Glens Falls, Scott “Squirrel” Steenken and his partner, Linda Gould of Malta and Kathleen “Teddy Bear” Hockenberry and her husband, Edward III of Kingsbury; her grandchildren, Theresa “TC” Stewart and her husband, Charlie, Sarah Hoban and her husband, Michael, David Lebrun, Jr. and his fiancée, Autumn Marsh, Zachary King, Brianna Stenken, twins, Dylan Steenken and Marissa Steenken, Alexzandra Hockenberry, triplets, Edward Hockenberry, IV, Sidney Hockenberry and Hunter Hockenberry; nine great grandchildren; her sister, Brenda Scaia; her brother, Leonard Prevost; her sister in law, Donna Prevost; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Audrey’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Monday, July 8, 2019, at St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church on the park in Hudson Falls.

The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Alphonsus Cemetery in the town of Queensbury, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Edward.

HUDSON FALLS – James T. Ellis, Sr., 70, of Elizabeth Street, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2019, at Washington Center in Argyle.

Born on May 18, 1949, in Fort Edward, he was the son of the late Richard Ellis and Doris Ellis Stott.

He married his first wife, Eleanor Whiting Ellis in South Glens Falls and his second wife, the late Mary Roberts Ellis in Fort Edward.

He loved going to Hudson Falls Juckett Park, playing bingo and he was so proud that he taught his son, Tom how to drive.  He was also so proud of Jason Hammond for enlisting in the National Guard, who now is in bootcamp.

James dearly loved his Aunt Margaret Miner, who passed away before him.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Robert Ellis, who passed away in 1964.

Survivors left to remember James are, his children, Robert Ellis and his wife, Kateria of South Glens Falls, Scott Ellis of Hudson Falls and James Ellis, Jr. and his companion Tonya Bradway, Cheryl Ellis of Hudson Falls and the son, whom he lived with Tom Ellis of Hudson Falls; one sister, Margaret Bennett and her husband, Ray of Fort Edward, his ‘Big Sister” Roseann Curry of Fort Edward, his “grandson”, Snuggle the Dog, who loved him for all the food Grandpa gave him; and his beloved grandchildren.

Calling hour will be on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, from 11 to Noon, at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Prayers will be offered at Noon at the Funeral Home.

Following the prayers, burial will be at Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

Dad would want to thank Danielle Hammond for what she does for the family and also his sons, Tom and Scott, for taking care of him his last days.  Also, the family would like to thank Washington Center Day Program and the Renal Center in Glens Falls or the wonderful care given to James.

GLENS FALLS – Wilma Oddy, 68, of Glens Falls, passed away on June 27, 2019 at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on March 3, 1951 in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Wilhelmina (McIntyre) Gregory.

After working for over 20 years, Wilma retired from C.R. Bard.

In her off time, she enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting.  Wilma also was an avid science fiction fan, especially Star Trek.  Most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren.

Besides her parents, Wilma was predeceased by her son, Jonathan Martin and her brother, Bruce Gregory.

Survivors include her two children, Leah Thomas and her husband, David of Warren, PA and Matthew Oddy and his wife, Amy of Suwanee, GA; her four grandchildren, Benjamin Thomas, Zachary Thomas, Grayce Thomas and Ali Hudgins; her brothers and sisters, Lance Gregory, Pamela Hayes, Deborah Witherell, Kathleen King, Della Gregory and Laurie Smith; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Moss Street Cemetery in the town of Kingsbury.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Veterans charity of your choice.  The family will also appreciate any floral tributes.
