Robert M. “Bob” Cackener

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAQUEENSBURY & HUDSON FALLS – Robert M. “Bob” Cackener, 89, formerly of Hudson Falls and more recently of The Glen at Hiland Meadows, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on March 20, 1924 in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Millard W. and Madaline (Root) Cackener.

Bob served in the United States Army Medical Corp. on a hospital ship in North Africa during World War II.

He graduated from Hudson Falls High School and in1952, Bob received his Bachelor of Science degree from St. Lawrence University.   He continued his education and was awarded a Masters of Arts degree in education from SUNY at Oneonta.

On April 17, 1960, he married the love of his life, Helen Lewis at the First United Methodist Church in Schenectady and become father to three beautiful young daughters.

For 25 years, Bob taught 5th grade at Margaret Murphy Elementary School in Hudson Falls, retiring in 1980.    He loved the opportunity to teach and care about so many children. 

Bob was a member of the NY State United Teachers Association and for several years he was the President of the local teachers union.  Bob was a very active man belonging to several organizations.   He was a member, an Elder and a Clerk of the Session for many years at the First Presbyterian Church in Hudson Falls. Other organizations that he belonged to include, the Schenectady Lodge #1174/F. & A.M., The Oriental Temple, AANOMS, the Glens Falls YMCA and an honorary life member and volunteer of S.P.A.C.   Bob loved the ballet and listening to opera.  At the time of his death, he was reading a 500 page book on the history of ballet.  Along with his wife, he was a docent at The Hyde Collection.   Bob was also a member of the American Legion Post 574 of Hudson Falls and volunteered at Station WMHT/WMHX.  

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Helen Cackener of Queensbury; his three daughters, Deborah L. Poplasky and her husband, Thomas of Canandaigua, Elizabeth Lewis-Michl and her husband, Thomas of Delmar and Margaret Lewis-Price of Tualatin, Oregon; his brother, John H. Cackener and his wife, Priscilla of Westfield; seven grandchildren, Caitlin Bartusch and her husband, Jeff, Betsy Adkins and her husband, Chad, Glyn Michl, Meredith Michl,  Sarah Price, Hannah Price and Rob Price; and his great grandson, Thomas Adkins.

Friends may call on Thursday, July 25, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m.  at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

Funeral Services will be conducted 9:30 a.m. on Friday, July 26, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church in Hudson Falls, with the Rev. Michael Planke, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2013 at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in the town of Stillwater.

Robert A. “Bob” Rock, Sr.

RockQUEENSBURY – Robert A. “Bob” Rock, Sr., 63, of Sugarbush Road, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at his home.

Born on July 25, 1949, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Dorothy (Johnson) Rock and the late Roger A. Rock.

Bob was formerly married to the mother of his children, Gail Brown.  Bob was a roller-skating fanatic, he lived on his skates.  He also enjoyed bowling with family and friends.  At the end of his life, Bob was a caregiver. He loved this part of his career, because he could give back by helping others.  In his younger years, he enjoyed camping in the Adirondacks and deer hunting with his friends.  Bob loved traveling with his mother, Dorothy throughout the country; they would just get in the car and go.  Most of all, Bob loved the Lord.  He was a member of the Calvary’s Family Life Center.  Bob loved attending church and listening to Christian music, especially Randy Travis and 4 Ever 1 Christian Music Group.

He will be remembered for being a kind and caring man, with a big heart.  He will be missed by everyone that he touched.

Bob is survived by his son, Robert A. Rock, Jr. and his wife, Kim of Apex, NC; his daughter, Kristi Rock of Rotterdam; his mother, Dorothy Rock of Queensbury; his siblings, Roger T. Rock and his wife, Irene of Hudson Falls, John J. Rock and his wife, Johann of Hudson Falls and Carol Brown of Glens Falls; four grandchildren, Sara Rock, Tiaja Harris, Jahlil Harris and Danel Harris; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, from 11 to 1 p.m. at the Calvary’s Family Life Center, 100 Sherman Ave in Glens Falls.

Funeral services will follow at 1 pm at the church, with Pastor Paul Keehr, officiating.

Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

Mrs. Margaret E. Young

YoungHUDSON FALLS – Mrs. Margaret E. Young, 84, of John Street, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on October 6, 1928, in Fort Edward, she was the daughter of the late Willard J. and Margaret R. (Stewart) Perry.

On November 17, 1946, she married Richard E. Young, Sr., at St. Joseph’s Church in Fort Edward.  Richard passed away on November 15, 2000, after 55 wonderful years of marriage.

Margaret retired from General Electric Company after 44 years of service.  She enjoyed camping in the Adirondacks with her husband and family and bowling in the Mixed Up Couples league for years at B&C Lanes.   Margaret loved traveling with her husband and spending winters in Florida.  She cherished her family, especially her grandchildren.  Margaret was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, William Wright and her sister, Dorothy Taylor.

Survivors include her children, Margaret “Peggy” Woodcock and her husband, Charles of Fort Edward, Richard Young, Jr., and his wife, Clara of Glens Falls, William Young and his wife, Mary of Fort Edward, Penny Therrien and her husband, Richard of Hudson Falls and Candy Pratt and her husband Stanley “Rick” of Queensbury; 13 grandchildren, Charles Woodcock, Jr. and his wife, Deborah, Michael Woodcock, Christine Woodcock, Rachel Frasier, Richard E. Young, III and his wife, Maleah, Thomas Young and his wife, Nikki, Jody Burgess and her husband, Ethan, Kimberly Therrien and her fiancé, Mark McDonald, Michelle Osgood and her husband, Jake, Melissa Therrien and her fiancé, John LaTour, Nichole Rushlow, Lena Stone and her husband, Jeffery and Curtis Pratt; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marie A. Sexton

SextonFORT EDWARD – Marie A. Sexton, 92, a longtime resident of Fort Edward, who later moved to Earl Towers in Hudson Falls and most recently to Cambridge Guest Home, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 19, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, after a short illness.

Born on October 12, 1920, in Brookefield, Mass, she was the daughter of the late Park and Elizabeth (Russell) Nichols.

Marie was a high school graduate and continued her education in New York City, learning how to be an accomplished seamstress.

On May 15, 1949, she married Richard C. “Dick” Sexton at the St. Alphonsus Church, formerly in Glens Falls.  Dick passed away on April 15, 1998, after almost 50 years of marriage.

Marie was a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Home Bureau.  She worked at Brone Shirt Factory on East Street in Fort Edward until it closed and then she was employed at Troy Shirt-Makers Guild in Glens Falls, until her retirement.

Marie enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading and collecting cookbooks.   She also loved trips to Maine with her sister, Daisie Beadnell and her brother in law, Bill.    Most of all, Marie cherished spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Marlene Marie Sexton and her sister, Marjorie Tilford.

Marie is survived by her daughters, Deb Colvin and her husband, Herb of Queensbury and Cindy Collier and her husband, Tom of Corinth; three grandchildren, Jim Collier and his wife, Mary of Fort Edward, Tomm Collier of Corinth and Herb Colvin, II, and his significant other, Kori Rayno of Fort Ann; four great grandchildren, Alexander Collier, Gillian Collier, Max Richard Collier and Julia Colvin; her sister, Daisie Beadnell and her husband, Bill; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Rite of Committal will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

Michael F. Gonyo

HUDSON FALLS – Michael F. Gonyo, 68, of Feeder Street, went into the arms of the Lord, on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at the Glens Falls Hospital.

 Born November 13, 1944 in Fort Edward, he was the son of the late Abner D. and Glenis (Drown) Gonyo.

He was a 1962 graduate of Hudson Falls High School and on February 15, 1975 he married Kathleen Stiles in Hudson Falls.

Michael was a faithful member of the Greater Glens Falls Bible Baptist Church in Hudson Falls.

He had many enjoyments with included flying and studying history.

In addition to his parents, two sisters, Mildred French and Cora Moses, also died before him.

Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Kathleen (Stiles) Gonyo of Hudson Falls; his brother, David Gonyo of Virginia Beach, VA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 29, 2013 at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Greater Glens Falls Bible Baptist Church on West Street in Hudson Falls with Pastor Guy Goodell, officiating.

Merton R. Bickford

BickfordFORT EDWARD – Merton R. Bickford, 89, of Ethan Allen St., Fort Edward passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born December 25, 1923, he was the son of the late Merton and Ellen (Whalen) Bickford.

He attended Fort Edward High School and Michigan State College through the Army specialization training program.

Mert was a Corporal in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the 198th AAA Battalion and fought in New Guinea and Luzon, Philippines. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and two Bronze stars.

After the war, Mert went to work for the Scott Paper Co where he was employed for 38 years as a Maintenance Supervisor.

He was a past member of the Fort Edward Knights of Columbus, past president of the Fort Edward Lions Club, member of the “T” Bird Country Club and a member of the Glens Falls Elks Lodge.

On October 14, 1950, he married Phyllis Barrett of Brooklyn, NY. She passed away October 17, 2008, after 58 wonderful years of marriage.

In addition to his parents and wife, he is predeceased by his  sisters, Anne and Beatrice and his brothers John and Leon.

Mert is survived by his son Brian Bickford of Glens Falls, his daughter Leslee Bickford and her husband Greg Smotzer of Glens Falls; grandchildren: Kelsey, Kallen and Patrick Smotzer; his sister Margaret Montero and her husband, Robert of Argyle; and brothers Lawrence  Bickford and his wife, Barbara of Fort Edward and Joseph Bickford and his wife, Terry of Hudson Falls; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours and funeral services are private.

Private interment, with Military Honors will take place at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Veteran’s Cemetery in the town of Stillwater.

Mert’s family would like to extend a special thanks to his neighbor, Reggie Peters, for his friendship and support. They would also like to thank Mert’s home health care aides, his niece Karen and his long time friend Lance Elliott for their compassion and concern.

Peggy L. Mabb

QUEENSBURY – Peggy L. Mabb, 68, of Queensbury, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2013, at the Glens Falls Hospital, after a long illness.

Born on February 15, 1945, in Tichonderoga, she was the daughter of the late Joel and Viola  (Norton) Tredway.

In October of 1977, she married Donald Mabb in Wells, Vermont.

For many years she owned and operated the Hid-Away Bar in Glens Falls and worked for many of the area bars.  She also operated the Travel Inn in Hudson Falls. Peggy also worked as a nurse’s aide at Eden Park and Hallmark Nursing Homes..

She loved to play pool and watch NASCAR.  She enjoyed crafting, including quilting, loved to shop and loved all animals in general but was particularly fond of her dogs.

Peggy is survived by her husband of 35 years, Donald Mabb of Queensbury; her children, Roy Dubay and his wife, Dottie of Gansevoort, Deborah Glaze of Norfolk, VA, Darlene Glaze and her significant other, Kenton of Howes Pointe, NC, Dennis Mabb and his wife Wendy of Kiniport, TN, DJ Mabb of Queensbury, Deais Clark and her husband,  Paul of Cascade, Mont, Deanne Healy of Queensbury and Sam Willard of Belair, SC; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; her brother, Doug Campney of Queensbury; her sisters, Catherine Manney of Queensbury and Gloria Stevens of Hudson Falls; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

Cain, HelenHUDSON FALLS – Helen P. Cain, 93, a longtime Hudson Falls resident, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the Kingsway nursing Center in Schenectady.

Born on April 27, 1920, in Hudson Falls, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Katherine (Holmes) Morency.

Her husband, Frank Cain, whom she married in 1941, passed away in 1983.

Helen worked for WT Grant, formerly in Hudson Falls and then for many years as a waitress for the Lantern Lodge in Saratoga Springs.

Her life was dedicated to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her great-great grandchild.

In addition to her husband and her parents, she is predeceased by a son Ronald Cain and a brother, William Morency.

Helen is survived by one son, Frank W. Cain and his wife Audrey of Hudson Falls; her daughters, Carolyn Cain Breckheimer and her husband, Edward of Syracuse, Marilyn Salamone and her husband, Frank of Schenectady and Sharon Smith of Troy; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great grandchild; her sisters, Margaret Berrigan of Glen Lake and Marie Northrup of Fort Edward; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Raymond H. Haynes

ATHOL – Raymond H. Haynes, 63, of Athol, went into the arms of the Lord on Sunday, July 14, 2013 after a long illness.

Born on February 27, 1950, in Glens Falls he was the son of the late Harlon and Dorothy (Christian) Haynes.

He attended Hudson Falls High School.

On December 8, 1977, he married Polly Ward.

Ray owned and operated PA Haynes logging for many years.  He loved deep sea fishing, hunting and antique trucks.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by an infant sister Virginia Haynes.

Ray is survived by his twin brother, Richard H. Haynes and his wife, Judy of Ocala, FL, his brothers and sisters,  Dora Haynes of Cohoes, Edmund Haynes and his wife, Patricia of Hudson Falls Wilma Haynes of Hudson Falls, Linda Haynes of Longmeadow, MA, Boyd Haynes and his wife, Linda of Mineville, Lloyd Haynes and his wife Anna of North Hudson, Ronald Haynes of Cherry Plains, Howard Haynes and his wife, Holly of Fairfax Stratton, VA; his wife Polly Haynes of Athol; several nieces, nephews and cousins; his brother in law and best friend Wayne and Beverly Ward of Granville; and his dog Blackie.

A celebration of Ray’s life will take place at Haviland’s Cove in Glens Falls on Saturday, July 20, 2013, starting at noon.

HofferHUDSON FALLS – William S. Hoffer, Sr., 47, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday July 11, 2013 at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on August 9, 1965, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Elaine (Evans) Hoffer and the late Robert E. Hoffer.

On August 10, 1996, he married Renee Ryder.

Bill most recently worked for Priority Electric in Wilton.

He loved NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt, Sr.  Most of all, he loved being with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Renee (Ryder) Hoffer of Hudson Falls; his mother Elaine (Evans) Hoffer of Hudson Falls; his children, Alyssa Hoffer, Samantha Hoffer, Scott Hoffer and William Hoffer, Jr., all of Hudson Falls; his brothers and sisters, Jeffrey Hoffer and his fiancé, Lisa Stone of Pottersville, Debbie Mosher and her husband, Ed of Maine, Elissa Gadow and her husband, Michael of California and Robert E. Hoffer, III and his wife, Amy of Moreau; and several aunts uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

SOUTH GLENS FALLS – Patricia A. “Patti” Dixon, 70, of South Glens Falls, passed away, surrounded by her loving family, on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Albany Medical Center, following a brief illness.

Born on July 7, 1943, in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late George and Lucille (Deyette) Lambert.

On November 19, 1961, she married John Dixon, in Fair Haven, Vermont.

Patti was a waitress for many years and is most well known for her band “Patti Dixon and the Real Thing,” a band she founded and played with from 1973 to 2002.  She was a communicant of St. Michael’s the Archangel Church in South Glens Falls.

She enjoyed cooking, baking and reading, especially Stephen King.  She was a homemaker and compassionate caregiver to family and friends alike. Patti also loved all types of animals.

Patti is survived by her husband of 51 years, John Dixon of South Glens Falls; her four children, Brian Dixon and his wife, Rosemary of Corcoran, MN, Christine Collins and her husband, T. Burke Collins of Hudson Falls, Candi Dixon of South Glens Falls and John Dixon, Jr. and his wife, Rita of South Glens Falls; her grandchildren, Michael Dixon, Joseph Dixon, Kyle Dixon, John Dixon, VI and Nina Marshall; one brother, Larry Lambert and his wife, Joan of South Glen Falls; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arthur J. “Art” Rivers

QUEENSBURY – Arthur J. “Art” Rivers, 74, of Vermont Avenue, went to be with his beloved wife, Shirley, on Sunday, July 7, 2013.

Born on September 20, 1938, in South Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Richard M. and Rose (Butler) Rivers.

Art was a 1957 graduate of South Glens Falls High School and on July 19, 1958, he married the love of his life, Shirley M. Dashnaw.  She passed away in 1993.

For over 30 years, Art worked a job he loved as a welder at Chase Bag in the town of Moreau.  He was an avid bowler with the Ivy League and enjoyed deer hunting in the Catskills with his family Art was also excellent at throwing horseshoes.  He cherished the time he spent with his family camping in Minerva.

Art could play the harmonica by ear, all he needed was to listen to the song and he could play it.  More recently, he enjoyed his Facebook family.  They kept him connected.  Art had a wonderful sense of humor and loved being around people.  Whenever he met someone, he never forgot them and made them feel important.

Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Shirley Rivers and a son, John Rivers, three brothers, LaRoy “Pat” Rivers, Wayne Rivers and David Rivers and his sister, Priscilla Crum.

Survivors include his children, Priscilla Dearborn and her husband, Willie of Corinth, Arthur E. Rivers and his wife, Joan of Fort Edward, Kristine Flores and her husband, Conrad of Texas and Timothy Rivers and his wife, Mary of Florida; 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; his brother, Leeward Rivers of South Glens Falls and Harry Rivers and his wife, Addie of South Glens Falls; his sister, Rose Brown and her husband, Gary of Salem and Wanda Maier and her husband, Duane of Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 Born on October 9, 1953 in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late James B. and Eleanor (Kimball) Burke.

 In his younger years, Burkie worked at Chase Bag in Moreau and on several local farms.  His last employment was driving a taxi for Capitaland and for Tri-County Taxi, located in Glens Falls.

 Burkie loved fishing and camping in the Adirondacks.  He enjoyed muscle cars and the love of his life was a 1968 Plymouth GTX 440.  He enjoyed watching NASCAR races and his favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt, Sr.  He also loved listening to rock and roll music and Johnny Cash.

 Besides his parents, Burkie was predeceased by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kimball and Mr. and Mrs. William Burke, step father, Art Fountaine, and his grandson, Caeden Burke.

 Survivors include his children, Joanne Burke (HR Reynolds) of Hudson Falls, Darlene Burke (Omer Sertdal) of Warrensburg, Mary Ellen Burke (Walter Winchell) of Hudson Falls, Darrell “Matt” Burke, Jr (Amanda) of Hudson Falls, Paul R. Burke of Hudson Falls, and Tracey Burke of Queensbury, his best friend, Carol “Dom” Mandolare of Fort Edward; his grandchildren, Jamison Reynolds, Jade Winchell, Makenzie Winchell, Makayla Winchell, Priscilla Burke, Hailey Burke, Abigail Labshere, Eliana Burke, Izik Sanders, and Oliver Sanders; his brother, Glenn P. Burke (Melissa) of Glens Falls, step brother, Chris Fountaine (Barb); his nephew, Evan Burke; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

 Friends may call on Sunday, July 14, from 1 to 3pm at Carleton Funeral Home, Inc. 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls. 

 A graveside service will be conducted at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fort Edward at 11 A.M. on Monday, July 15.
