QUEENSBURY – Marcia V. Sawn, mom passed into the arms of the Lord on March 8, 2019, after a short Illness.
She was born on July 30, 1938, in West Rupert, Vermont, the daughter of Martha and Donald Viault. Marcia attended grade school in the Rupert one room schoolhouse and was a graduate of Washington Academy in Salem.
In 1956, Marcia took a job at the Glens Falls Insurance Co., where she met her future husband, Richard “Dick” Sawn. Mom and Dad settled in Queensbury and raised two children. Mom went into the child care business and spent the next fifty years caring for dozens and dozens of children. Many of them became like a second family to her.
Sunday was her favorite day, as there was church in the morning and then they would travel to West Rupert for Sunday dinner with her grandparents every week. Mom loved Vermont and was a true Vermonter. She was quirky, clever and stubborn. She liked to discuss politics and would rarely admit she had been wrong about anything! Mom also loved music, and often would play her piano and sing with family and friends or crank up the stereo and dance around the living room. She was fun loving, warm and caring.
Dick tragically passed away early in life, and eventually Mom met and married Luman “Lu” Bennett. They spent over twenty blissful years together, until he passed away in 2006. They loved their cats and loved to travel, often traveling throughout New York, New England and Canada on Summer vacations.
Once again Mom was left to renew her life, and she was fortunate to find her special friend, Robert “Bing” Bingham. They also did a lot of traveling and photographing in the Adirondacks and her beloved Vermont. Bing passed away in 2010.
Marcia is predeceased by her father, Donald Viault; her husbands, Richard Sawn and Luman Bennett; and her special friend, Robert Bingham.
She is survived by her mother, Martha Coffin of Sunderland Vt.; her sisters, Bonnie Trout of Sunderland Vt., Denise Legg of Hudson Falls and Dorene Viault of Queensbury; and her brother, Robert “Bobby” Viault of Palm Springs FL; her children, Steven (Dawn) Sawn of Kingsbury, Susan (Brian) Gosselin of Hampton, Kimberly (Paul) Phillips and Michael Bennett; her grandchildren, Jason Sawn, Casey (Colleen) Wilson, Joshua (Shari) Wilson, Randy Sawn; as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
We would like to thank the staff of the Slate Valley Center in North Granville, for the excellent care they gave mom.
At mom’s request, there will not be any calling hours, and interment will be at the convenience of the family, in the spring.
My sisters and I remember Marcia fondly. I don’t know how many summers we spent at her house but I am sure there were quite a few. We will always remember the music and all the stories she would tell us. She was an amazing woman, we shall never forget her or her smile.
My mother adopted Marcia as a sister so she was my aunt and I loved her as an aunt. We enjoyed our chocolate and complaining about Trump. She is missed.
Thank you so much for including my Dad in that beautiful write up. Marcia was very good to my Dad, and they were so good for each other at a time when they both needed companionship and fun. They were like kids when they were together and it was heartwarming to watch. Whenever I look at the many photos they took together, on their many travels, I just think and hope that when I get to those years of life, that I am fortunate enough to have that. It was special. Such fond memories. You will be so missed Marcia. My sincere condolences.
WE WERE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE FOUND Marcia when we needed day care for our young kids. Marcia was a loving caregiver and our kids learned a lot socially and mentally. Marcia provided a wonderful place where we knew our kids were taken care of and had a good time while we did our jobs. Thank you Marcia, you will be missed and remembered fondly.
So sorry to hear this….so many of my early memories are of my life long friends I made while in the care of Marcia.
Marcia was an amazing woman. I have so many memories of her when she would take care of my brother and I at her house, the music she played on the piano, the huge black bag full of wooden blocks, cleaning up the toys with a snow shovel at the end of the day. Her many many pen pals, her love of Ireland and wearing green all the time. The fact that she never let u get away with anything, she taught us to be good kids and treated us like we were her own. My heart goes out to her family and know you are all in my heart and thoughts.
Mrs. Sawn was truly a remarkable woman. My fond memories go back to my very early years as our families have been together for many years through Boy Scouts, church activities, and Youth Group. I was very fortunate to have Mrs. Sawn take care of my son while he was young as well. You will be missed. My deepest condolences to the family.
Sue and family, I’m sure you know that Marcia was very special to all of us. Justin and Ian always enjoyed going there as I’m sure all of the kids did.She shared many stories of her adventures. She was very fair and wise, and of course her sense of humor was wonderful. We will all treasure our special memories of her.I’m positive we are all better people for knowing and sharing special times with her. Hugs to all.
