Lena May Underwood Chambers Coons

QUEENSBURY – Lena May Underwood Chambers Coons, 94 of Queensbury and most recently of Warrensburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon, November 16, 2023.

Lena was born on April 26, 1929 in the town of Kingsbury to Arthur and Mabel (Farley) Underwood. Lena was a life-long area resident and worked for Glens Falls Insurance until she married Ralph Chambers. She then worked in the Queensbury School cafeteria while her children were small before joining her husband at their business, Adirondack Fire Equipment Sales in Queensbury. Ralph passed away in 1998 and a few years later, she met Kenneth Coons and they were soon married. Kenneth passed away in 2003.

Lena was a devoted member of the Onieda Community Church in Queensbury for over 70 years. She and her husband both were very active in the Bay Ridge Rescue Squad where she served in the auxiliary for many years. Lena also volunteered her time at the Mountainside Free Library and with Meals on Wheels.

She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, crossword puzzles, and playing Scrabble. The time she most loved was time spent with her grandchildren and their families.

In addition to her parents and her husbands, Lena is predeceased by her stepmother, Marjorie Underwood; a brother, Herman Underwood; her sisters, Jean Harrold and Kay Nicholson; two sons, Lawrence and Matthew Chambers; and a grandson, Randall Jenks.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda O’Brien; her daughter in law, Judy Potter; step-children, Andrea Mannix (Pat), Margie Avery, Jerry Coons (Janice), and Douglas Coons (Sandra); her grandchildren, Robin Jenks, Zachary Chambers, Cale Chambers, Katie Campbell, Angela Williams, Charlie Coons, Meghan Jones, Justin Coons, Jeremy Coons, and Brittany Coons; Great Grandchildren, John, Autumn, Lilah, Calvin, Arthur, Riley, and Abbigail; many beloved nieces and nephews as well as 2 great nephews and 1 great niece; and a very special family member who she thought of as a daughter, Carol Sharp.

The family would like to thank the nurses at Countryside Adult Home, her loving niece Nancy Nicholson who took great care of her and Andrea for being by her side.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, December 4, 2023 at the Oneida Community Church, 197 Sunnyside Road in Queensbury. Burial will be in Kingsbury Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Oneida Community Church, 197 Sunnyside Road, Queensbury, NY 12804, or to the Bay Ridge Fire Department, 1080 Bay Rd, Lake George, NY 12845.
