Carolyn S. Gaulin

Gaulin, CarolynHUDSON FALLS – Carolyn S. Gaulin, 65, of Hudson Falls, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2015, at the Glens Falls Hospital, after a short illness.

Born February 1, 1949, in St. Johnsville, she was the daughter of Barbara (Walters) Rockefeller and the late John D. Rockefeller.

In 1972, Carolyn married Thomas Gaulin at St. Mary’s Church in Hudson Falls.

She was employed for several years at SUNY Adirondack, formally Adirondack Community College.

Carolyn enjoyed reading, attending the Balloon Festival, going to Broadway Shows, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.  She also enjoyed spending time with her dogs.  Carolyn was also a founding member of Free to Breathe, a lung cancer awareness organization.

Besides her father, Carolyn was predeceased by two nieces, Barbara Lynch and Deanna Winchell Heaney.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Thomas Gaulin of Hudson Falls; her mother, Barbara (Walters) Rockefeller of  Queensbury; her two children, Nikki Gaulin of Hudson Falls, Shanna Steele and her husband, Ben of CT; her grandchildren, Mason and Cayden Steele; her sisters, Cathy Lynch and her husband, Robert of South Glens Falls, Linda Cohen and her husband, John of GA, Jo Condon and her husband, Larry of GA; her brothers in law, James Gaulin and his wife, Sue of Hudson Falls, Keith Gaulin of Glens Falls, David Gaulin of MA: her father in law, Lester Gaulin of Glens Falls; her special friends, Dana and Elaine Winchell and family; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call, Monday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street, in Hudson Falls.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, at 11 a.m., at the funeral home, with the Reverend Thomas Babiuch, officiating.

Burial will follow the services, at Pine View Cemetery, in the town of Queensbury.

Brayden Christopher Ray

RaySOUTH GLENS FALLS –  Brayden Christopher Ray, 15 months, was taken away and placed in the arms of the Lord, unexpectedly on January 17, 2015.

Born October 19, 2013, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Craig Christopher Brown of Stillwater and Angel Marie Ray of NC.

Brayden was a happy baby, who loved his dog, Lance.  He enjoyed waving and smiling to everyone with his little open hand.  He also loved John Deere farm tractors.

Survivors include his father, Craig Christopher Brown of Stillwater; his mother, Angel Marie Ray of NC; his half brother, Codie Brown; his half sister, Lilly Brown; his grandparents, Armond and Brenda Brown of Gansevoort, Roy and Debbie Pecue of South Glens Fall, Joseph Ray, Sr. of South Glens Falls; his great grandfather, Armond Brown, Sr. of Saratoga; his great grandparents, Paul and Clara Senecal of Whitehall; several aunts, uncles and cousins; as well as his special mema and papa, Dee and Larry Sweet of South Glens Falls.

Friends may call on Friday, January 30, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street, in Hudson Falls.

A graveside service will be held at Southside Cemetery, in the town of Moreau, at a later date in the spring.

Charles Francis Winch

WinchHARTFORD – Charles Francis Winch, 76, passed away on his beloved Dolly Parton’s birthday, on Monday, January 19, 2015, at Glens Falls Hospital, with his daughter, Tami, and his niece, Tracy by his side.

Born in Albany, he was the son of the late James O. and Dolores (Duffy) Winch, Sr.

Charles owned and operated Lebanon Valley Truck Stop, where he also sold Arctic Cat and Ski-doo snowmobiles. Later he drove school bus for Hudson Falls Central School and New Lebanon Central School. Upon moving to Hartford, Charles and his mother built his beloved home, where he lived until his death. The home sat at the top of an old logging trail with breathtaking views. Charles was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper.   He also loved listening to classic country music, especially, Dolly Parton.  

He leaves behind his daughters, Tami Elise Winch and her fiancé, Andrew Hill of Valley Falls, Heidi Ann Bell and her husband, Randy Lee of Franklinton, LA, Karen March of Bradenton, FL; his grandchildren, Nathaniel Bell of Slidell, LA, Jeremiah Bell and his wife, Jessica , and Andrew Bell and his wife, Amanda, both of Franklinton, LA; his great granddaughter, Presleigh Bell of Franklinton, LA; his brothers, James O. Winch, Jr. and his wife, Diana of Pisgah Forrest, NC, Gerald P. Winch II and his wife, Patricia of Hudson Falls; his niece, Tracy Winch-Colomb of Hudson Falls; as well as several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Charles’ family thanks Sharon and Jack Deyette and Mr. and Mrs. Rusty Norton for their years of friendship to Charles. They would also like to thank the nurses and doctors of Glens Falls Hospital T3, T5 and 4 West for their care, love and compassion.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be in the spring, at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the Town of Fort Edward.

Shirley Granger

GrangerHUDSON FALLS – Shirley Granger, 95, a long time resident of Ferry Street, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2015, at the Fort Hudson Healthcare and Rehab Center, surrounded by her loving family.

Born October 7, 1919 in Fort Edward, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Elizabeth (Cutler) Tougas.

Shirley was a graduate of Hudson Falls High School.

For 25 ½ years, she was employed at General Electric in Fort Edward.

She was a life member of the United Methodist Church of Hudson Falls where she was a member of the Ladies group and assisted in the Lenten lunches until her health prevented her from doing so.

Shirley enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and reading.

Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her four brothers, Edgar, Harold Paul and Ray Tougas, as well as her sisters, Elizabeth Griffin Ruth Launder and June Whalen

Survivors include her four children, Thomas Granger and his companion Dianne Bell of Indiana, Michael Granger and his wife, Barbara of Glens Falls, Shirley Cole of Hudson Falls, Debra Record and her fiancé Frank Gitto of Glens Falls; six grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; her brothers, Alan Tougas and his wife, Ann of Richmond, VA; her sister, Lorraine Richelt of CA; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, at the United Methodist Church of Hudson Falls, 227 Main St., in Hudson Falls with the Rev. Dereck Hansen, pastor, officiating.

A luncheon will follow the services at the church.

Interment will take place in the spring at Moss Street Cemetery in the town of Kingsbury.

Preston Combs

CombsWESTFIELD, MA – Preston Combs, 89, Westfield MA, passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at Noble Hospital in Westfield.

Born June 2, 1925, in Warrensburg, he was the son of the late Norris Combs and Viola (Baker) Combs Tomlinson.

Preston was a graduate of Fort Ann High School.  He was employed at Union Bag in South Glens Falls, Singer Sewing Machine in Utica, and retired from Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, after 33 years.

He married Jean Place, who was the love of his life and best friend.  She was the center of his universe.  They did everything together after his retirement. She passed away after 58 wonderful years of marriage.

Survivors include his two sons, Ronald Combs of Hartford and Kevin Combs of Williamstown, MA; his two daughters, Paula Phaneuf of Springfield, MA and Brenda Morrissey of Westfield, MA; his brother, Paul Tomlinson of Salem; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m., and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., in Hudson Falls.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m., on Saturday, at the funeral home, with the Reverend Robert Flower, pastor of South Granville Congregational Church, officiating.

Burial will follow the funeral service at Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

Louise G. Holmes

HolmesSOUTH GLENS FALLS – Louise Georgina Holmes, 93, a longtime resident of South Glens Falls, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2015, at Washington Center in Argyle.

Born January 4, 1922, in Douai Nord, France, she was the daughter of the late George and Flore (Creson) Delecroix.

In 1946, Louise married John Holmes in France.  He passed away in 1958.

Louise was a seamstress at J&J Lingerie Co., formerly in Glens Falls, for 48 years.

She was taken care of and lived with her son, John and his wife, Pat for many years.  Louise was an avid wrestling fan, her favorite wrestler was John Cena.  She also enjoyed Lifetime movies and spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and most of all her beloved dogs, especially Chiquita.

Survivors include her son, John Holmes and his wife, Patricia of Argyle; her daughter, Josette Caudrelier and her husband, Bernard of Sin-Le-Noble, France; her grandchildren, Michael Scott West, Vonda Holmes-Waldram and her husband, Gerry, William Holmes and his wife, Sylvia, Sebastian Caudrelier and his wife, Aude, Janick Balliez and her husband, Marc, Xavier Courtecussie and his wife, Nathalie; several great grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will be private.

Donations in memory of Louise may be made to an animal charity of one’s choice.

Judith J. Johnson

Johnson, JudithHUDSON FALLS – Judith Johnson, 71, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2015, while at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

Judith was raised in Hudson Falls.  She was the daughter of the late William and Regina  Bilodeau.

Judith earned her Bachelor’s from St. Lawrence University in 1966 and completed a Certificate of Study at the Sorburrne.

In 1999, Judith retired from New York State Audit and Control Division.  She specialized in fraud and abuse in Medicaid.  During her 34 year career, she received numerous awards and recognition.  She worked in the New York City Office for over 25 years before completing her career in Albany and then returned to her childhood home in Hudson Falls.

Judith’s passions were Paris, the arts, and cooking.  While in New York City she opened the restaurant, Lion D’ORR in Brooklyn.  The restaurant was well known for wonderful French cuisine and neighborhood charm.  Judith also loved to paint, and to enjoy the warmth of a friendship and good conversation over a glass of wine.

She was a global traveler, making frequent trips to Paris and other European countries, as well as the United States.  She served on the leaders of the Feeder Canal Alliance and the Hudson River Music Hall.  Her passion for all kinds of music made her not only a board member of the Hudson River Music Hall, but also a benefactor, a friend and a beloved member of its “family”.  She loved and was loved by its board, its volunteers, it regulars, patrons and its musicians.  She brought, to all who knew her, laughter, new experiences, opinions, class and food, food, food!

Her charm, grace, generous spirit and passion for life will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Judith is survived by many loving friends.

Friends may call on Wednesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street, in Hudson Falls.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church, on the park in Hudson Falls, with the Reverend Thomas Babiuch, pastor, officiating.

The Rite of Committal will take place in the spring at Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

Robert Paul Charbonneau

CharbonneauADAMSVILLE – Robert Paul Charbonneau, 60, of Adamsville, went home to the Lord on January 10, 2015, at Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls.

Born October 23, 1954, in Schenectady, he was the son of Donna Wells and the late Robert Charbonneau.

Robert was a member of the Cornerstone Church Ministry.  He had a great passion for music.  He was once involved with the Salvation Army.   Robert loved camping, trains, computers and especially loved spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie Charbonneau of Adamsville; his children, Lawrence Tremblay and his wife, Kristena of Glens Falls and Cora Bryant of Porter, TX; his grandchildren, Bobby, Anna, DJ, Blake and J.P.; his siblings, Billy Wicks and his wife, Cathy of Victory Mills, Judy Sweet and her husband, Jim of South Carolina and Mike Charbonneau; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends may call on Tuesday, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Cornerstone Church, 1767 State Rte 196, in the town of Kingsbury.

A funeral service will follow the calling hours, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, at the church, with the Reverend Derik Bartholomew, pastor, officiating.

James B. “JB” “Jake” Yole, Jr.

yolejbHUDSON FALLS – James B. “JB” “Jake” Yole, Jr., 54, of Hudson Falls passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born March 11, 1960, in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late James B. and Agnes (Chapin) Yole, Sr.

JB served almost 32 years as a New York State Corrections Officer at Great Meadow Prison in Comstock.

He enjoyed watching NASCAR, being on the internet, listening to Rock N’ Roll and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.  JB loved life, his work and his family and friends.  He would say today, “Keep the faith chirp, chirp!”

Survivors include his wife, Leigh Belair-Yole of Hudson Falls; his three children, Haleigh Yole of Hudson Falls, Danelle Murphy of Hudson Falls, Briehana Murphy of Hudson Falls; his buddy, Phil Gagnon of Hudson Falls; his dog , Maggie; his cat, Joe; his parrot, Tobie; and his “adopted daughter”, Kate Bombard of Glens Falls.

At JB’s family request, there are no services scheduled.

JB’s family wishes to thank Dr. Eric Pillemer, his nurses and the people of High Peaks Hospice, for their loving care during his illness.

Betty Barbara Winchell

Winchell, BettyHUDSON FALLS – Betty Barbara Winchell, 84, formerly of Mercy Street, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 4 ,2015, at the Fort Hudson Health Care Facility, after a long illness.

Born on May 24, 1930, in Chester, Vermont, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Evelyn (Hall) Breault.

On Saturday, January 29, 1949, she married Stillman Roger Winchell at 10 Delaware Avenue in Hudson Falls. He passed away on May 5, 2008, after 59 wonderful years of marriage.

Betty worked for Native Textiles for over 40 years as a Warper.

She was a lifelong member of the Gospel Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Hudson Falls.  Betty was an avid crocheter and knitted hats and mittens for everyone.  She was a self taught musician, who could play the banjo, mandolin, accordion and the piano.  Betty used her talents for God at church and to entertain her family.

She loved Dachshunds.  Betty had at least two at a time.  She raised two granddaughters as her own.  Betty deeply loved Jesus and her family.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Jacklyn Iler and her siblings, Duane Breault, Colleen Breault Johnson, Leonard Breault, Jr. and Stephen Breault.

She is survived by her son, Charles Winchell and his wife, Terry of Glens Falls; 14 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren;  two sisters, Vivian Hoag Norton of Granville and Mary Joseph of Fort Edward; her four brothers, Kenneth Breault of Georgia, Arthur Breault of Connecticut, Dale Breault of Hartford and Malcolm Breault of Hartford; her sister in law JoAnn Willams of South Glens Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Thursday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am on Friday at the Gospel Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, 30 LaCrosse St in Hudson Falls, with the Paul Mead, pastor, officiating

Betty will be laid to rest next to her husband at 1:30 on Friday, at the Gerald B.H. Soloman Saratoga National Cemetery, on Duell Road in the town of Stillwater.

Betty’s family would like to thank the staff at the Fort Hudson Health Care Facility, for the loving care that was given to Betty during her stay.

Nelson “Ed” Varney

Varney, NelsonHUDSON FALLS – Nelson “Ed” Varney, 83, of Lower Allen Street, passed away on January 5, 2015, at Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on April 21, 1931 in Fort Edward, he was the son of the late Nelson E. Varney and Lillian (Roberts) Varney Norman.

Ed was a Korean War Veteran, serving with the U. S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954.  He was a Communications Specialist attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

On April 22, 1956, he married Shirley M. Phillips at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fort Edward, where both he and Shirley were communicants.  Shirley passed away on November 28, 2013, after 57 wonderful years of marriage.

He was an employee of Western Union Telegraph Company from 1954 to 1972 and was office manager when the Glens Falls office officially closed. Ed then went to the New York State Department of Corrections until he retired, as a principal clerk, from Washington Correctional Facility in Comstock.

He loved listening to music and was an avid reader.  Ed enjoyed spending summers at his camp at Lake Hadlock with his family and friends.  Auto trips, with his wife around the Adirondacks and area countryside were very special to him. Ed also cherished the time he spent with his grandsons, Brian, Scott and Ryan.

Ed was well known as a singer in the area and was very proud to have directed the Fort Edward Knights of Columbus Minstrels for several years. He loved people and people loved him. It was easy for Ed to make friends and he had many, wherever he went. Ed was an outgoing, social person who enjoyed being around his family and friends.  He was a member of the Fort Edward/Kingsbury Senior Citizens, where last year he was recognized as Senior Citizen of the Year.

Besides his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, John R. Varney.

Survivors include his son, Nelson “David” Varney and his wife, Lola of Angier, NC; his daughter, Linda Walzer and her husband, Edward of Fuquay-Varina, NC; his three grandsons, Brian Varney of Hudson Falls, Scott Varney of Lake George and Ryan Walzer of Fuquay-Varina, NC; his two brothers, Floyd R. Varney and his wife, Cindy of West Fort Ann and Robert K. Varney and his wife, Wilma of Fort Edward; his sister in law, Patricia Varney of Fort Edward; and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St. in Hudson Falls.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph’s Church in Fort Edward, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, pastor,officiating.

Joan Vaughn

Vaughn, JoanKINGSBURY – Joan Vaughn, 81, ended her earthly journey on January 4, 2015.  She is now walking arm in arm with her best friend and love of her life, Malcolm.  May she finally be at Peace.

Born on November 25, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Gertrude King.

After spending her childhood in Glens Falls and graduating from Glens Falls High School, she married Malcolm Vaughn on December 14, 1952.  Together they raised their three children on their dairy farm in Kingsbury.

Joan is predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Malcolm and her sisters, Marie Prevost and Patricia Lewis.

She leaves behind her three children and their spouses , Blair Vaughn and his wife, Pamela, Douglas Vaughn and his wife, Theresa and Lynnette Cabral and her husband, James; her grandchildren, Nicolas Vaughn and his wife, Rachel, McKenzie Vaughn, Monica Vaughn, Colette Vaughn, Allen Hoffman and Dalton Cabral; her sister, Barbara Buckley and her husband, Tom; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours and per Joan’s wishes the funeral will be for the immediate family only.

Burial will be in the spring at Moss Street Cemetery in the town of Kingsbury.

The family wishes to thank her caregiver and friend Marjorie Johnson Taylor and her husband, John for the wonderful loving care given to Joan.

George H. Underwood

Underwood. MrHUDSON FALLS – George H. Underwood, 91, of Hudson Falls, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at Glens Falls Hospital, after a brief illness.

Born May 30, 1923 in Queensbury, he was the son of the late Howard and Katherine (Hill) Underwood.

George was drafted in the United States Army during World War II and was very proud to have served his country.  He toured in North Africa and marched in Italy, having fought in the Battle of Anzio. George helped liberate Italy and France during the war.  He was granted an honorary diploma from Hudson Falls High School because of his extraordinary service to his country.

On August 26, 1948, George married Ruth Annette Story in Hartford.  She passed away on July 3, 2008, after 60 wonderful years of marriage.   George built the home that he shared with his wife, raised their family and created lifelong memories.   He was very proud that he was able to build their family home without a mortgage.

In addition to his parents and wife, George was predeceased by his sisters, Emma Parsons and Katherine Tyminski, and his brothers, Clarence, Charles, Philip, and Ralph Underwood.

He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Underwood of Fort Edward; his sons, Norman Underwood and his wife, Carol, of South Glens Falls, and George Underwood and his wife, Jeannie of Argyle;  his grandchildren, Robert Underwood and his companion, Melissa Harvey of Hampton, Erica Thielemier and her husband, John Paul of Arkansas, and Ryan Underwood of South Glens Falls; his great grandchildren, Isabella and Lilianah Underwood, and Darby Thielemier; his brothers, Ernest Underwood, Harry Underwood and his wife, Beverly, and Leo Underwood and his wife, Diantha; his sisters in law, Dorothy Underwood, Lucille Underwood, Barbara (Story) Newton and her husband Thomas, Jane (Vanderwalker) Story and Sarah Jane (Rice) Story; as well as several nieces and nephews

Friends and family may call, Saturday, January 10, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street, in Hudson Falls.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home immediately following calling hours, at 12 p.m., with the Reverend Derek Hansen, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Hudson Falls, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at Moss Street Cemetery in the Town of Kingsbury.
