HUDSON FALLS – Crystal A. Wheeler, 36, of Willow Street, passed away on October 12, 2021, at her home, after a long illness.

Born on October 9, 1985, she was the daughter of Carleen (Whalen) Dixon and Kevin and Kim Wheeler.

Through the years, Crystal has worked several jobs in the area.  Although, her life was filled with her family.  Crystal loved her two children, Dagan and Liliana and was happiest when she was with them.  Whether it was playing games, reading or just talking with them, she was at peace.  Crystal also loved her dog, Harley and even though she said she didn’t like cats, no one believed her.   She loved to color and was talented at crocheting. 

Crystal was predeceased by all her grandparents, Leo and Barbara Whalen, Gerald and Anna Mae Wheeler and Frederick and Joyce Kaiser.

Survivors include her parents, Carleen Dixon and Kevin and Kimberly Wheeler; her children, Liliana and Dagan Schulze; her brothers, Brant Dixon, Maximus Jones, Edgar Gates and Matthew Gates; her niece, Cheyenne Gates; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Family and friends may call on Thursday, October 21, 2021 from 4 to 6 pm at Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls. 

Following the calling hours, at 6:30 p.m., a celebration of Crystal’s life will be at the Hudson Falls American Legion, Post 574, 72 Pearl Street in Hudson Falls.

Culpeper, VA – James “Jimmy” P. Oliver, Jr., 55, formerly of South Glens Falls, NY passed away peacefully at his home in Culpeper, VA with his wife by his side, on October 10, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on July 13, 1966, in Glens Falls, NY, he was the son of James P. Oliver, Sr. and the late Jacqueline “Jackie” (Murray) Oliver.

James is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Mulchy) Oliver, whom he married on September 7, 1996.  They recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. 

He is also survived by his brother Scott (Lori) Oliver of Queensbury, sister Lee-Ann (Dale) Stone, their two children, James and Aleea of South Glens Falls.  His stepson Jerry Dalaba of Queensbury, stepdaughter Casey (John) Klem and their son Benjamin of Billings, MT.  He was the best “Grandpa” and will be greatly missed.  His stepmother, Donna (Burnham) Oliver and stepsisters, Kari (Paul) Zurlo of Ausable Forks and Lori (Steve) Below of Saugerties.  His sister-in-law Joan (Paul) Daly of Fonda and Laurie (Adam) Salzer of Nassau, brother-in-law Pat (Maryann) Mulchy of Amsterdam, brother-in-law Anthony Pileggi of Kellogg, ID.  Several Aunts, Uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and countless family members who will never forget him.

Besides his Mother Jackie, he was predeceased by his Maternal Grandparents, Robert and Elaine Murray of Hudson Falls, NY.  Paternal Grandparents, James and Florence Oliver of Hudson Falls, NY.  His brother-in-law, Timothy Mulchy of Tribes Hill, NY and sister-in-law Nancy Pileggi of Kellogg, ID. Several Aunts, Uncles and niece.

Jim graduated from South Glens Falls High School in 1985.  Following high school, he served 5 years active duty in the U.S. Navy as a helicopter mechanic. He was stationed in Norfolk, VA and Alameda, CA. He signed an extended year so he could travel and see the world on the USS Tripoli with an honorable discharge in 1990.

In 1993, Jim moved to Virginia and worked in the cellular communications industry for multiple cellular companies. With his cellular background, he joined Communication Electronics in Fairfax, VA in 1999.  He started out as an installer and was promoted to Service Manager in 2008.  He was truly dedicated to his job and worked right up to his death.  Over the course of his cancer, he never allowed his treatments or surgeries to prevent him from doing the job he loved. 

Jim’s prized possession was his Harley that he loved to ride with his wife.  His loyal companions were his dog Sadie and his cats, Sandy and Andre.  He is now reunited with his dogs Buddy, Deuce and Harley and his cats, Harley and Crystal.  His many interests were playing guitar, singing in several bands, and spending summers at his camp since childhood at Trout Lake.  Jim and Kathy traveled to Jamaica several times and met life-long friends.  Jim always looked forward to spending time with the light of his life, his grandson Ben.  Jim was a devoted husband and beloved son, stepfather and grandfather. He was a genuine friend to countless people.  We will all remember his infectious smile and laugh.

GLENS FALLS – Bernard “Bernie” R. Gregory, 82, of Third Street, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 4, 2021 at Glens Falls Hospital.

Bernie, a Glens Falls native and life-long resident, was born on Thursday, Nov. 24, 1938.  He was one of five children.

He was the beloved husband of Joyce Ann LaFarr, who sadly predeceased him in 2009.  Joyce and Bernie met in 1956 and were married in 1957.  Together they started a family in Glens Falls having three children, George, Bernie, and Betsy.  After several years, life chose a different path for Bernie and he and Joyce parted temporarily.

Bernie and Joyce spent eight years apart, but never lost their love for one another.  In 1978 Bernie was reunited with his teenage sweetheart only now their family included a new member, his stepson Jimmy.  For more than 30 years they raised their four children and several grandchildren.

Bernie was not just a loving husband, father “Dad”, and grandfather “Pa”, he also had a rewarding career at Glens Falls Portland Cement Co., now Lehigh Cement.  He worked at the cement company for decades and was so proud to drive the huge Caterpillar front end loaders in their pits.  He was so proud driving family and friends into the mill to show them his loader.

For those who knew Bernie, it was obvious he absolutely cherished his family, especially the little ones.  He loved to dress the babies up in goofy clothes and hats just to get a laugh.  Bernie loved people and if you were blessed to know him you couldn’t help but love him.   He would enjoy a conversation with anyone about anything, but he definitely could not “make a long story short”.

When Bernie wasn’t spending time with family or working at the mill you could find him cruising on his motorcycle, a Honda Goldwing.  In his words “that baby floats over the road” and he loved to punch it, “oh baby”!  He was also an amazing deer hunter.  We all have heard him tell stories of how he shot at four deer and dropped each one with his trusty .270.

Sadly, Bernie was predeceased by his love Joyce, son George H. Gregory Sr., granddaughter Theresa Mulcahy, brother Edgar, brother Anthony, and sister Beatrice (Gregory) Shaw.

Survivors include his son, Bernie Gregory and his wife, Kelly of South Glens Falls and their children Ben and Hannah, his daughter, Betsy Sanders and her husband, Gary of Queensbury, and her children, Charlie and Ronnie; his stepson, Jim LaFarr, and his wife, Dori of Queensbury, and their son Tanner; his grandson, George Gregory Jr.; and a sister, Mary (Gregory) Alger who he recently reunited with by traveling to Virginia for his first time on a jet plane.  Bernie was also blessed with numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins, who he loved dearly.

Family and friends are asked to call from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, at the Carleton Funeral Home Inc., 68 Main St., in Hudson Falls.

Burial will follow the calling hours, 1:30 p.m., at Corinth Rural Cemetery, 38 Saratoga Ave. in Corinth, with the Reverend Patti Girard, officiating.

HUDSON FALLS – Ernest “Ernie” Underwood, 88, of Perkins Drive Extension, passed away on October 4, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Born on August 6, 1933 in Hudson Falls, he was the son of the late Howard R. and Katherine (Hill) Underwood. 

Ernie was a graduate of Hudson Falls High School.  On August 9, 1953, he married Joan F. Billetdoux at St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls. She passed away on May 4, 2013, after 59 years of marriage.

For 35 years, Ernie was employed at the New York Telephone Company in Glens Falls, retiring in 1990.

Ernie was a communicant of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Hudson Falls and a past member of the Usher’s Association.

Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Clarence, George, Ralph, Philip, Harry and Charles Underwood and his sisters, Emma Parsons and Katherine Cominsky.

Survivors include four daughters, Bonny Smith and her husband, David, Terri Ireland and her husband, Bob, Carol Merritt, and her husband, Bill and Mary Lovely and her husband, Wally; his son, Tom Underwood and his life partner, Brenda LaPorte; his grandchildren, Edward, Daniel, Jill, Erin, Sarah, Kara, Sean, Josh, Bryan, Brett, Terry and Susan; 20 great grandchildren; his brother, Leo Underwood and his wife, Diantha; his sisters in law, Doris Underwood and Beverly Underwood; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Per Ernie’s request, services will be private.

KINGSBURY – Josh Alexander, 41, of Kingsbury, passed away unexpectedly at Glens Falls Hospital on October 5, 2021.

Born on July 24, 1980 in Glens Falls, he was the son of Stephanie Alexander of Kingsbury and the late James Alexander, Sr.

Josh loved being outdoors, enjoying nature, while fishing throughout the Adirondacks and at most times on Lake Champlain.  He spent many hours riding his motorcycle and especially treasured trips he took to Laconia with his friends.  Most important to Josh was his son, Mason, whom he never missed a nightly phone call with.  Josh will be remembered for his charm, charisma, contagious laugh and bright smile.

Besides his mother, survivors include his son, Mason Michael Alexander; his sister, Jaydeen Marr and her husband, Kevin of Kingsbury; his brother, James Alexander, Jr. and his wife, Grace of Kingsbury; his nieces and nephews, Lorrie, Reanna, Kylie, Alexander and Devin; his very best friend, Dennis (Biscuit) Mitchell of Lake George and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Josh’s services will be private.

FORT EDWARD – John W. Hinchliffe, 81, of Fort Edward passed away October 3, 2021, at Glens Falls Hospital with his family by his side.

Born January 2, 1940 in Paterson, NJ, he was the son of the late Mary (McHale) and Arthur J. Hinchliffe Sr. 

John graduated from Hudson Falls High School in 1958, married Suzanne Cantiello and served three years active duty in the US Army, with an honorable discharge in 1965.

For 29 years John worked at Scott Paper Co. in Fort Edward.  He took an early retirement and studied at ACC, College of Saint Rose and SUNY Plattsburgh, earning a BS in special education and a master´s degree in education.

John taught at Schenectady High School, Fort Ann, Oppenheim-Ephratah, R&E May School, the Washington Correctional Facility in Comstock, and he also substituted at many area schools.

John volunteered for Giant Step Hotline in Glens Falls and as a literacy volunteer. He volunteered at Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne, served on the Pastoral Council and as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s. His favorite charity was the annual Thanksgiving James P. Hinchliffe 5K Run/Walk for ALS in Glens Falls, in memory of his nephew.

John’s many interests included hiking, canoeing, biking, woodworking, reading, camping, ice fishing, ping pong, target shooting and theater.

Happiness was pushing off in a canoe early in the morning and hiking in the Adirondacks. Trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains and to Maine were always special.  Events were all the happier when family was together. John was proud of his wife and children, their values and their great work ethics.

John beat lung cancer twice.  Later he was diagnosed with Parkinson´s disease.

Besides his parents, John was predeceased by a brother, Arthur J. Hinchliffe Jr.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Suzanne; his son Joseph and his wife Amy; five daughters: Nancy, Carolyn and her companion Jim VanGuilder, Anne Rehm and her husband Carl, Laura Smith and her husband Jeff, Christine and her companion, Michael Graham.

John is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Jessica Simmons, Jeffery Butterfield, Emily Morales, Ryan, Matthew and Mark Hinchliffe, and 4 great-grandchildren, Ryker, Addilyne, Christopher and Caden.  John is survived by one sister, Mary Flaxmayer and her husband Ron; two brothers; James Hinchliffe and William Hinchliffe and his wife Carole, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., in Hudson Falls. 

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday October 8, 2021, 10 a.m., at St. Mary’s/ St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls. 

The Rite of Committal will be conducted Friday, following the funeral mass, at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

HUDSON FALLS – Dorothy Lemery Crowley, 99, of Crowley Road,  passed away at her home on September 30, 2021.

Born on February 18, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Alice (Demers) Lemery.

Dorothy graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1940.  Four years later, she married Joseph D. Crowley.  He died on March 11, 1996, after 51 years of marriage.  

Dorothy was past member of the Washington County Pony Association, where she was Treasurer for 25 years.   Also, for several years, she worked with Hospice.

Her enjoyments included reading, traveling and going to basket raffles.

Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her five brothers, Buck, Harold, Whitey, Irving and Lester and her three sisters, Julia, Jane and Barbara and her grandson in law, Mark Orlosky.

Survivors include her two sons, David and James Crowley, Sr. of Hudson Falls; her two daughters, Jo-Ann Lindsay and her husband, James of Hudson Falls and Darlene Crowley of Stillwater, OK; her two grandsons, Daniel Lindsay and his companion, Becky Burgess and James Crowley and his companion, Mary Amodio; her three granddaughters, Colleen Orlosky of Queensbury, Erin Siaulnski and her husband, Steve of Argyle and Jennifer Barrett and her husband, Dusty of Idaho; her four great granddaughters, Lindsay Crowley, Erica Siaulnski, Danika Lindsay and Annabelle Lindsay; one great grandson, Ryan Siaulnski ; a sister, Lorraine Bigelow; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

HUDSON FALLS – Joseph Donald Smania, 51, of Hudson Falls, passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Born on August 18, 1970, in Schenectady, he was the son of Joseph and Barbara Smania.

Joe was a talented man with many hobbies and interests. He was well known and respected as a skilled carpenter, most currently through his business Alpha Brothers Construction, with his partner Matt Hoffman.

Joe was an outgoing person that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.  His legacy he left behind in his work will always live on.

Left to cherish his memory, in addition to his parents, are his domestic partner of 14 years, Holleen Viehmann; his daughters, Samantha Smania of Albany, Georgia, Joline Smania and her fiancé Vinchenzo Leombruno of Hudson Falls,  and Natalie (Tevin) Adams of Albany, Georgia; his step daughter, Katie Makarick of Hudson Falls, and step son, Salvatore Leombruno of Hudson Falls; his sisters, Jennifer (Matt) Sharp of Hartford, Amanda Smania of Malta; his brother, Daniel Smania of Troy; seven grandchildren; and three nephews.

As per Joe’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services.

SOUTH GLENS FALLS – Joan (Shaw) McKinney, 85, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, September 26, 2021. She fought courageously for over 30 years with Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia and most recently with heart disease.

Born on June 10, 1936 in Glens Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Mildred (Rousseau) Shaw.  “Joanie”, as many called her, grew up in Fort Edward.

Growing up, she took pleasure in the simple things; singing, playing piano, helping her mother in the garden, and spending summer days in the sun with her friends at Hadlock Pond.

Joan was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Fort Edward, later joining the church community of St. Michael The Archangel in South Glens Falls. Joan’s faith was very important to her and guided her throughout life.

Joan graduated from Fort Edward High School as Valedictorian of her class in 1954. She went on to graduate, Magna Cum Laude, from The College of Saint Rose in 1958 with a degree in Elementary Education. Joan began her 30 plus year teaching career teaching kindergarten at Moreau Elementary School, then taught First Grade at Burgoyne Ave Elementary in Hudson Falls for the majority of those years until retirement. In her classroom, she taught with compassion, patience, and adoration for all her students.

Joan married David McKinney on August 2, 1958. They had four children during their marriage, and were blessed with nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Family time, holidays, and special occasions were always important to her and she made sure all were celebrated with her own style and flair! She absolutely loved being ‘Grandma’, ‘Gaga’, ‘Gram’ and looked forward to ‘any’ and ‘all’ time she spent with her grandchildren.

Joan is predeceased by her Grandson, David “D.J.” Gorrie who resided with her the last ten years. They enjoyed many in depth conversations about life along with watching and cheering for their favorite Boston Red Sox and Dallas Cowboys teams. We are comforted in knowing they are together again.

Left to cherish her memory are David McKinney and their four children, Stephen (Maureen) McKinney, Anne McKinney, Brian(Shelly) McKinney, and Karen (Rich) Lancette; eight grandchildren, Brooke, Nick, Jason, Michael, Ryan, Brianna, Kristyn and Megan; two great grandchildren, Blakely and Madison; several nieces, nephews and several longtime friends, who all were very special to her.  

Visiting hours for family and friends are scheduled for Saturday, October 2, 2021 from 11 AM to 1 PM at St. Michael The Archangel Church, 80 Saratoga Ave South Glens Falls, NY 12803

Her Funeral Mass will follow at 1 PM on Saturday, at the church.

HUDSON FALLS – John Joseph McMurry, 46, passed away peacefully, at home on Monday, September 20, 2021, with his family and dear friends by his side

John was born on February 19, 1975 and raised in Hudson Falls.  He completed his Associates Degree at Adirondack Community College before earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology at Unity College in Unity, Maine.  John then settled down in Burlington, Vermont, where he grew deep roots to his community and lived a rich life focusing on good health, deep friendships and a fulfilling career. His career spanned many fascinating jobs and pursuits, most recently working for the State of Vermont and as senior Engineer with Vermont Energy Investment Corporation as a consultant in charge of snowmaking for numerous mountains in New York and Vermont, where for the past nine years, John dedicated himself to supporting ski areas in improving the energy efficiency of their operations.

John had a rare combination of technical skill and relationship building that made him a leader in his industry. Even before receiving his cancer diagnosis, John understood what it meant to cherish life and the beauty that it holds in people, in nature, and in experiences, both simple and lavish.  He lived with intention, generosity, appreciation, a sense of adventure, and an overflowing abundance of love.  He filled his days with culinary pursuits, deep late-night conversations, adrenaline-heavy outdoor activities and most importantly to John, time spent with loved ones.  Those in John’s presence were guaranteed to be enthralled by a story (or many) accompanied by a delicious meal, and craft cocktail, a mountain biking adventure and often all the above.

As fun easy-going and lively as John was, he was quality a thoughtful, spiritual and kind-hearted.  He was the most reliable shoulder to lean on, always ready to listen and share anything that he could, like hand-me-down baby supplies for a coworker, home renovation tips, financial savvy and of course, anything and everything related to snowmaking.  John’s self-determination and commitment to self-reflection is a testament to his dedication to be the best friend, father, family member and sentimental leader that he could be

John was raised in a very close-knit family that provided his boundless love and support through his life.  His children share his love of mountain biking and adventure, creativity and that same twinkle in his eye when they smile.

John’s VEIC colleagues were more an extension of family than coworkers, they will remember him as someone with the passion, integrity and courage to ask the difficult question and find a way to do what was right, no matter what.  You could always count on John to sit in front at meetings and say what was on everyone’s mind with a cheeky smile on his face.  His driving force was always to cause the necessary trouble required for progress and he inspired all he worked with to push a little more, care a little more and try a little more!

He was predeceased by his grandparents, John McMurry, Robert and Betty Ann (Deyette) Springer and Joyce Jennings.

John is survived by his loving family, his mother and father, Jacqueline and Joseph McMurry; his sister, Jolene McMurry Davis and her husband, Joel Davis; his treasured sons, Levi and George; his grandmother, Ruth McDuff McMurry; his trusty sidekick, Daisy; and an endless community of friends, coworkers and others he made a lasting impact on; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of life will take place on October 9, 2021, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Hudson Falls American Legion, 72 Pearl Street, Hudson Falls, New York.

The family would to thank Jolene Davis, His loving sister, for the special care given to John during his last days.

HUDSON FALLS – Richard “Rick” Therrien, 72, succumbed to injuries on September 25, 2021, from a tragic motorcycle accident.
 
Born on January 31, 1949 in Whitehall, he was the son of the late Myrtle and Bernard Bingham. 

Rick married his wife Penny in Hudson Falls, at the Baptist Church. They were planning to celebrate 50 years of marriage next month. 
 
Rick retired from Irving Tissue after 46 years of dedicated service. In his spare time, he enjoyed officiating soccer and baseball.  He also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. In retirement, Rick remained very active and could be seen on the ball field or hockey rink supporting his grandson, Mason. He never missed a practice or game and traveled all over to watch him.  Rick could also be seen all over town riding his bicycle while enjoying his favorite music. Music was huge passion of his. He played guitar and loved going to concerts with his daughters. He was an avid Mets fan and had a lifelong passion for motorcycles and rode often. You would never see Rick without a smile on his face. He looked forward to large family gatherings and spending time with the people in his life that mattered the most. The love and support he provided to all of us will be greatly missed.  

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Jack Chadwick.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Penny; his daughters, Kimberly Therrien (Mark), 
Michelle Osgood (Jake), Melissa LaTour (John) and Nicole Rushlow; his grandchildren, Erika Hoyt, Jake Osgood, Ryan Therrien, Alyssa Daley, Corey Rushlow, Lauren Daley, Emily Lohret, Megan McDonald and Mason Signor; his great grandchildren, Nora Simmons, Lucy Osgood, Levon Hoyt and Kaden Burch and his brother, Leonard Chadwick (Gail).  

Friends may call Wednesday, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., in Hudson Falls.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, 11 a.m., at the funeral home. 

Burial will take place following the funeral service, Thursday, at Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

GLENS FALLS – Cody W. Sherman, 27, passed away unexpectedly on September 22, 2021.

Born June 20, 1994, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Sherri (Beebe) and William (Bill) C. Sherman, III.

Cody attended Argyle High School and then went onto work a variety of jobs throughout the years.  Most recently, he worked for a local landscaping company where he found himself enjoying working outdoors and working hard with his hands. 

He loved baseball, being outdoors, fishing and hunting, where he created treasured memories with his family and friends.    He had a passion for riding dirt bikes, ATV’s and snowmobiles any chance he got; he was sure to be there to join in.  Cody loved nature and animals, along with numerous family pets he cared for over the years.

Cody was thoughtful, he would be there whenever there was someone in need. His family and friends were most important to him.  Cody had a huge, kind heart, with a smile just as big, along with a good handshake or the biggest bear hug to greet you with.  He had the family trait of a great sense of humor, always there to make you laugh with his crazy antics.

Cody is predeceased by his maternal and paternal great grandparents; his paternal grandfather, William C. Sherman, II; his dear great aunt and uncle, Betty (Bebee) and Dennis Stevens and his dear childhood friend, Meg Archer, who he considered to be a second sister.

Survivors left to cherish his memory include “his sissy”, Alyssa M. Sherman (Jim Alves); his mother, Sherri Sherman (Greg White); his father, William (Bill) Sherman (Evie Brown); his maternal grandmother, Joyce Wren (Kenny Moffit); his maternal grandfather, Bob Beebe (Gretchen); his paternal grandmother, Trudy Leblanc (Ed), along with many dear aunts, uncles and cousins.

In Cody’s young life of 27 years, he lived and loved life the best way he could.  Our beloved boy is at peace now and we, as his family and friends, will carry on with many wonderful memories to cherish for the days ahead.

Per Cody’s request, there with be no formal services.  A celebration of life will be held in Cody’s memory Saturday, September 25, 2021, 1 p.m., at 55 Harrison Ave., in South Glens Falls, New York.  All are welcome.
