Gavin Roger Washburn

KINGSBURY – Gavin Roger Washburn, went to be with the angels on Monday, October 14, 2013, at Albany Medical Center.
Although Gavin was not with us long, he brought great joy and will be forever loved and missed by his parents, grandparents, family, and friends.
He will be greeted in heaven by his great grandparents.
Those that Gavin left behind are his loving parents, James and Amy Washburn of Kingsbury; his grandparents, Dan and Judy Conley of Hudson Falls, Rick and Ann Hockman of Kingsbury, Mark and Debbie Washburn of Kingsbury, Norm and Alice Weller of Zephyer Hills, Florida, Diane Manley of Kingsbury; his uncles, Glen Baker, Jr. of Hudson Falls, Michael Washburn, Kyle Washburn and Lawrence Washburn, all of Kingsbury; and his two cousins, Nathan and Michael Washburn.
Gavin’s family wishes to thank the wonderful doctors and nurses at Albany Medical Center and Dr. Guido’s office, for all the love and support to James, Amy, and their entire family.
A graveside service will be conducted 9 a.m., Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Brown Cemetery in Fort Ann.

Patricia J. McClure

GLENS FALLS – Patricia “Bubbles” AKA “Pat In the Hat” McClure, 80, of Thomson Ave., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on December 24, 1932, at the family home in Fort Edward, she was the daughter of the late Orvil and Genevieve (Melanson) Perry.

Patricia graduated from Hudson Falls High School in 1949, where she was voted most athletic, in her senior year.  Following graduation, she worked in the tower at Warren County Airport and for several years, Patricia was employed with her son, Scott, at Sheridan Catheter in Argyle.  She loved working and being around people.  Patricia made many friends through her working career.

In August of 1990, Patricia married the love of her life, Frederick “Mac” McClure at the family home in Fort Edward.

She was a member of the Red Hat Society, which was so appropriate in that her favorite color was red. Patricia had many crazy hats that she loved wearing.   The crazier the hat, the better she liked it.   She also belonged to the Moreau Fund Band, where she played the kazoo.  Patricia was a huge fan of Tiger Woods and the NY Yankees.  She loved watching all kinds of sports, from ice skating, golf, football to her beloved Yankees.   Patricia also was a Hillary Clinton fan.  She collected Hillary memorabilia that was proudly displayed.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Jeff Dudley and her great grandchildren, Alex and Alexis Catalfamo.

Survivors include her loving husband of 23 years, Frederick “Mac” McClure of Glens Falls; her children, Barb MacDuff and her husband, Earl “Chief” of Hudson Falls, Michael Dudley and his wife, Maria of Fort Edward, Kathie Morency and her husband, Timothy “Mort” of Fort Edward,  Scott Dudley and his wife, Mindy of Hudson Falls and Steven Dudley and his wife, Marie, of Virginia; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Pillemar and his staff for their continued love and support, along with the staff at the C.R. Wood Cancer Center and High Peaks Hospice.

Friends may call on Friday, from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, following the calling hours, at the funeral home, with Pastor Steve Smith, of High Peaks Hospice and Palliative Care, officiating.

Burial  will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

GLENS FALLS – Patricia J. Slavin, 89, formerly of Dix Avenue, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at the Pines in Glens Falls

Born on January 29, 1925 in Fort Edward, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Edna (Palmer) Slavin.

Pat was a 1943 graduate of Hudson Falls High School, then furthered her education at Adirondack Community College.

She was employed at Glens Falls Credit Union, Beneficial Finance and then Glens Falls National Bank for nearly 30 years.

During her life Pat had lived in Fort Edward and Hudson Falls and then Glens Falls since about 1950.

She was a member of Christ Church of the United Methodist in Glens Falls, the Glens Falls Operetta Club and she was active in the Capital District Multiple Sclerosis in Albany.  Pat was also a member of the Tigers and White Sox Booster Clubs.

Survivors include two sisters, Claire Brennan of Argyle and Muriel Londrigan of Glens Falls; several nieces and nephews, Betsy Sidusky and her husband, John of Argyle, Vicki Anderson and her husband, Chris of  Queensbury, Mark Londrigan of Glens Falls, Gary Londrigan and his wife, Carol and Keith Londrigan, all of Queensbury; and six great nephews.

Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Derik Hansen, co-pastor of Christ Church of the United Methodist, officiating.

Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

Wilhelmina “Betty” Gregory

GregoryQUEENSBURY-Wilhelmina “Betty” Gregory, 85, entered her new life with the Lord on Friday, October 11, 2013 at Fort Hudson Nursing Center in Fort Edward. 

Born on May 6, 1928 in Mayslanding, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Enick and Mima (McIntire) Colts.

Betty spent 50 years happily married to the late Edgar Gregory.  They were married on August 19, 1944 in the town of Kingsbury.  Betty was a stay at home mom, where she raised their eight children and eleven foster children. 

The last seven years, Betty has resided at Fort Hudson Nursing Center in Fort Edward.  Alzheimer’s may have robbed her of a lot, but not of her love of babies, singing or dancing. 

Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her loving husband, Edgar who passed away in 1994, her son, Bruce Paul Gregory and her sister, Mary King.

Betty left behind her son, Lance Gregory and his wife, Jeanne of Queensbury; her six daughters; Wilma Oddy of Glens Falls, Pam Hayes and her husband, Robert of Wilton, Deborah Witherell and her husband, Brent of Fort Ann, Kathleen King and her husband, Shane of Fort Ann, Della Gregory of South Glens Falls and Laurie Smith and her husband, John of Warrensburg; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; her brother in law, Bernard Gregory of Glens Falls, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Betty also leaves behind the many family members she had acquired at Fort Hudson.

Friends may call on Monday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, at Our Lady of Annunciation Church in Queensbury.

The Rite of Committal will follow at the Moss Street Cemetery in the town of Kingsbury.

Betty Jeanne (Fogg) Viele

VieleHUDSON FALLS – Betty Jeanne (Fogg) Viele, 65, of Hudson Falls, passed away unexpectedly, after a short illness on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at her home.

Born November 13, 1947, in Plattsburg, she was the daughter of the late Albert J. Fogg and Joyce (Kelsey) Rouse.

Betty attended Fort Ann Schools then received her certificate in cosmetology, and was a licensed realtor.  She worked as a waitress, caregiver, and also worked at General Electric and C.R. Bard for many years.

She enjoyed reading, music, and watching classical movies, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Besides her parents, Betty is predeceased by her first husband, Paul G. Harrington and a special aunt, Barbara Earl.

Survivors include her loving husband, Ernie B. Viele, of Queensbury; her son, David Harrington, of Queensbury; her two daughters, Paula Maille and her husband, Mark, of Lake Luzerne, Jennifer Lanphear of Hudson Falls; her grandchildren, Robert Ladd, Jami Ladd, Samatha Celeste, Jenee Osgood, Derick Osgood, Madelynn Lanphear, Gavin Lanphear, Brooklin Lanphear; her step granddaughter, Stephanie Maille; her brother and sisters, Jo Denno, and her husband, Buck, of Hague, Lisa Hyatt and her husband, James, of Hudson Falls, John Rouse and his wife, Gina, of Hudson Falls, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many loving friends.

Friends and family may call on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street, Hudson Falls.

A prayer will be said at the funeral home, following calling hours, Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 8 p.m..

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Rita (Terry) Macy

WHITEHALL – Rita ( Terry) Macy, 75 of Whitehall, died Thursday, October 4, 2013, at her home

Born march 27, 1938,in Whitehall, she was the daughter of the late  Kenneth and Vera (Scism) Terry.

Her husband of 43 years, William J. Macy, died September 28, 1999. Her brother, Russell Terry, one nephew Stephen Terry, her maternal aunt, Evelyn (Scism) McGuire, and her sister-in-law, Jean (Townsend) Terry all died before her.

Survivors include three children, Shirley (Macy) LaRose and Theodore, Faye (Macy) Leduc and Yvon, and Joseph Macy; her brother Gene Terry and his wife Dixie, her sister-in-law Fay Terry, grandchildren Samantha ( LaRose) Kingsley and her husband David, Michelle LaRose, Renee Leduc, Carl Leduc, Zachary Macy, Ashley Macy, Alyssa Macy; two great-grandchildren Julian and Harper Kingsley, and several nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Graveside services are private and at the convenience of her family.

Edward G. “The General” Patten

PattenGANSEVOORT – HUDSON FALLS – Edward G. “The General”  Patten, 86, of Gansevoort, and previously of Court St. in Hudson Falls, passed away with his daughter and granddaughter by his side, on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on December 5, 1926, in Adamsville, he was the son of the late James F. and Evelyn (Walsh) Patten.

Edward attended Hartford Central School.  He was drafted and served with the United States Army at the end of World War II, stationed in South Korea.

He worked as a laborer for Local 18 out of Plattsburgh.

Edward loved the New York Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals as well as horse racing.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers, James Patten, Clifford Patten, Richard Patten and Raymond Patten, his sisters, Kay Patten and Dorothy Claire, his companion, Betty Rouse, his sister in law, Viola Patten, his brothers in law, Harry Dessaint, Don Flynn, Glenn Claire, Romeo Paradise and Frank Duell.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Jane Rouse and her fiancé, Chip Hammond of Granville; his granddaughter, Sara Elizabeth Gray and her companion Joe Sullivan of Lake George; his sisters and brothers, Ida Dessaint of Argyle, Robert Patten and his wife, Jane of Hudson Falls, Betty Duell of Fort Ann, Mildred Paradise of Gansevoort, Howard Patten and his wife Lois of Hudson Falls, Gladys Flynn of South Glens Falls, Elaine Benson of Fort Edward; several nieces, nephews and cousin; two sisters in law, Darlene Patten of Interlaken, NY and Carol Patten of Albany.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 12 Noon on Monday,  October 7, 2013 at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St. in Hudson Falls.

Services will be conducted at 12 Noon Monday at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

Bonnie A. Lefebvre

LefebrveGLENS FALLS – Bonnie A. Lefebvre, 67, of Chelsea Way, passed away peacefully and went to be with her Lord and Savior, on Monday, September 30, 2013, at Glens Falls Hospital.

Born January 9, 1946 in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Virgil and Lina (O’Connor) Harris. 

Bonnie graduated from Hudson Falls High School and began her working career.  She was a secretary, and later, a medical secretary, for Eden Park Nursing Home. 

She met her future husband, Richard, while working at the Nursing Home.  For 17 ½ years, Bonnie and Richard were blessed as foster care parents for 23 children.

Bonnie is survived by her loving husband, Richard Lefebvre of Glens Falls; her children, Rikki Lefebvre and his wife, Heather of Queensbury, Beth Lefebvre of Glens Falls, Sarah Bullouck and her husband, Steve of Hudson Falls, Scott Lefebvre of Hudson Falls; seven grandchildren; her brother Floyd Harris, and his wife Angie of Glens Falls; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside service will be conducted Friday, October 4, 2013, 10 A.M., at Pine View Cemetery in Queensbury, NY.

Arrangements are under the care of Carleton Funeral Home Inc., 68 Main Street, Hudson Falls.

Charles C. “Roach” Hicks Sr.

HUDSON FALLS   – Charles C. “Roach” Hicks, Sr., 66, of Quarry Crossing, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 30, 2013, at his home.

Born November 7, 1946 in Lebanon, New Hampshire, he was the son of the late William and Grace (Stimets) Hicks.  

He graduated from Hanover, New Hampshire High School and continued his education at Castleton State College in Vermont and then attended Adirondack Community College.   While attending Castleton State College, Charles met his future wife, Nancy Chickering.  They were married on June 6, 1970 in Bradford, Vermont.

Charles will be best remembered for his service to his country.  He enlisted on February 1966 Airborne, Infantry, Vietnam.  Charles went to Basic, A.I.T, Jump School and then to the 173rd, as a P.F.C..  He arrived R.V.N. on September 6, 1966.  Charles was sent to T.D.Y. to Cam Rahn Bay for 30 or so days.  He was held at Brigade Headquarters Co. A. Admin as a P.X. clerk for awhile, until finally he got his wish to go to B Co. 1/503 where he served with the 1st Platoon and Co. Headquarters as Forward Supply.  Charles was wounded March 11, 1967.  He initiated the action in defense on their perimeter of an estimated battalion of N.V. Regulars.  After he was hospitalized, he returned to B 1/503 and Doc to from June 1966 to September 1967.  He was then reassigned to the 82nd 3rd Brigade and deployed with them in 1968 back to Nam.  Finally in January 1969 he was discharge with no interest in reenlistment. 

He had many jobs and traveled most of the U.S.A..  He was a patch holder of “The Jury Motorcycle Club” for over 25 years.  He was employed by the N.Y.S Department of Corrections at Great Meadows Correctional Facility as a clerk. At one time he owned and operated a propane gas company, Action Gasers, in Argyle.  Charles was hard loving, fast living, and dauntless defender of integrity.  He obtained two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star with “V” and NO Good Conduct Medal!

Charles belonged to several organizations, which included the following; Disabled American Veterans, Hudson Falls American Legion Post 574, Glens Falls VFW, Vietnam Veterans of American, Military Order of Purple Heart, 173rd Airborne Brigade Association, 82nd Airborne Division Association, Combat Infantryman’s Association, and The Jury Motorcycle Club.

Survivors include his tolerant and loving wife of 43 years, Nancy (Chickering) Hicks of Hudson Falls; his children, Crystal Hay and her husband, Dean, of Pennsylvania, Heidi McCauliffe and her husband, Jason, of Salem, Charles C. Hicks Jr. and his wife, Huimin, of Loudenville and Robert B. Hicks and his wife, Robin, of Queensbury; his grandchildren, Caleb and Gabriel Hay, Sarah, Kayla, and Jenna McCauliffe, and Clark Hicks; his brother, William Hicks and his wife, Dianna, of Panama; his sisters, Linda Simbartl and her husband, Karel, of Ohio, Susan Leonard of Florida; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Our gratitude goes out to his longtime helper and housemate of 15 years, Erin Powell.

Friends and family may call on Thursday, October 3, 2013, from 2p.m. to 4p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Carleton Funeral Home Inc., 68 Main Street, Hudson Falls.

Richard Thomas Monahan

HUDSON FALLS – Richard Thomas Monahan, 88, the Mayor of Clark Street, went to join his heavenly family, on Sunday, September 29, 2013.

Born on Oct. 28, 1924 in Jenkinsville, he was the son of the late Jerry and Lena (Beecher) Monahan.

On June 3, 1945, Richard married Marie Ann Norton at St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls. They have enjoyed 68 wonderful years of marriage.

Richard was an employee of Monahan & Loughlin, Inc. from 1945 to 1974 when he became owner and operator of that company. After his retirement, he continued on at Monahan & Loughlin, Inc. as Chairman of the Board.   Richard also owned Mim Realty in Indian Lake and Moon Realty in Hudson Falls. Richard was a longtime member of the Capital District Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association.  He loved his company.  His work and his family was his life

Richard was a communicant of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls, where he also was on the Finance Committee and an usher. He was a member of the Monsignor Arthur S. Kiffin, Knights of Columbus Council # 296 in Hudson Falls and the Glens Falls Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge # 81.

In his younger years he and his friends Freddie, Jay, Mel and Tom enjoyed going to the Saratoga Race Track to watch the harness horses that he and his friends owned.   Richard loved to party and entertain his family and friends.  He was famous for his drive by checks of the community, always with Marie by his side. He loved watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren growing up.  Richard loved them all.  For many years, Richard enjoyed spending time with his family at his second home in Indian Lake.  He had a quick wit and a great memory for names and people. 

 Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, James Monahan, Robert Monahan, Clark Monahan, John Monahan, Clarence Monahan, Leo Monahan, Edward Monahan, William Monahan, Gerald Monahan and Carleton Monahan; his sisters, Elizabeth Monahan Keech, Mary Monahan Finger, Katherine Monahan, Helena Monahan Ryder  and Florence Monahan.

 Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Marie Monahan of Hudson Falls; his children, Michael L. Monahan and his wife, Donna of Naples, Florida, Patrick J. Monahan and his wife, Joan, of Moreau, Kathleen Hallenbeck and her husband, Kurt, of Hudson Falls and Karen Monahan McLaughlin of Hudson Falls, Joanne Davidson and her husband, Jeffrey of Hudson Falls; his sister, Teresa Marcantonio of Hudson Falls; his thirteen grandchildren, Brian Monahan and his wife, Bridget, David Monahan and his wife, Marika, Michelle Santor and her husband, Jason, Stephen Monahan and his wife, Megan, Sean Monahan, Christine Monahan, Marc Monahan and his wife, Desiree,  Joshua Hallenbeck, Mickey McLaughlin, Heather Battiste and her husband, Joseph, Erin McLaughlin, Chelsea Lemon and her husband, William and Melissa Davidson; 26 great grandchildren;  and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Richard also had special feelings for Stacey Hallenbeck, Mariko McLaughlin and Megan Monahan.

 Friends may call on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

 A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, at St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church, on the park, in Hudson Falls.

 Bearers will be Brian Monahan, David Monahan, Stephen Monahan, Sean Monahan, Marc Monahan, Mickey McLaughlin, Joshua Hallenbeck, Mike Fiorillo and Joe Battiste.  Honorary Bearers will be his granddaughters, Michelle Santor, Christine Monahan, Heather Battiste, Erin McLaughlin, Chelsea Lemon and Melissa Davidson.

The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the Town of Fort Edward.

Harold E. Vaughn

VaughnHUDSON FALLS – Harold E. Vaughn, 91, formerly of River Street, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving daughters on Saturday, September 28, 2013.

Born on October 13, 1921, in Kingsbury, he was the son of the late Millard and Mildred (Wells) Vaughn.

Harold grew up on a farm and went to school in Argyle.  Before enlisting in the US Army, he worked for a trucking company.  Upon his return from service, Harold began his career at Imperial Paint and Color, then Hercules and finally Ciba Geigy, retiring in 1983, with over 30 years of service.

On September, 4, 1943, he married Nellie Ydikoski, at St. Mary’s Church in Hudson Falls.

Harold enjoyed snowmobiling, tending to his vegetable garden and working outside on his yard.  Since he was an all around handyman, he earned the name, Mr. Fix It.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Charles Vaughn and his sister, Irene Gray.

Harold is survived by his wife of 70 years, Nellie Vaughn of Hudson Falls; four daughters, Patricia Deyette of Kingsbury, Diane Murray and her husband, Patrick of Hudson Falls, Kathleen Vaughn of Hudson Falls and Carol Basilio and her husband, Dominic of Queensbury; three grandchildren, Jack Deyette, Jr. and his wife, Sharon, Tammy Deyette and Shannon Potter and her husband, Todd; one great grandson, Matthew Ballard; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 from 11- 12 noon at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Following the calling hour, the Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward, with the Reverend Joseph Busch, pastor of Our Lady of The Annunciation, in Queensbury, officiating.

Helen Elizabeth Lewis Cackener

Cackener, Mrs.QUEENSBURY and HUDSON FALLS  –  Helen Elizabeth Lewis Cackener, 87, formerly of Hudson Falls and more recently of Queensbury, passed away after a short illness Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at Albany Medical Center.  Born in Elmira, NY, July 4, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Norman P. Lewis and Grace (Oakes) Lewis.

Helen graduated early from Newark Valley High School and then attended Wyoming Seminary Prep School in Kingston, PA for one year before entering Oberlin College.  Helen was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and received her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, Magna cum Laude, from Oberlin in 1948.  Helen followed in her mother’s footsteps, and felt called to teaching.  She earned a Master’s degree in Teaching from Harvard, where she was elected to Pi Lambda Theta.  In 1964 Helen received a John Hay Fellowship in Humanities to study at Williams College and then attended a NYS Summer Institute in the Humanities at Rochester Institute of Technology.  In the 1980’s, Helen continued her studies in Shakespeare and modern British poets at Worcester College, Oxford, England, and the Ashland Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Helen taught at Westbrook College in Portland Maine, and in Schenectady, prior to coming to Hudson Falls High School in 1960.  Helen taught English, Humanities, and Folklore there for 25 years, retiring in 1985.  She also advised the National Honor Society and served on the Executive Committee of the Hudson Falls Teachers’ Association, as a representative to the Assembly of the NYSTA, and as a state committee member for NYSUT.  Helen was a member of the NYS Folklore Society and wrote folklore and local history articles for the Glens Falls Today and Saratoga Style magazines.  Helen retold local ghost stories to many audiences over the years.

Helen was very active in her community and church.  She served three terms on the Session of the First Presbyterian Church in Hudson Falls where she was the first woman Elder and the first woman to be Clerk of Session.  In 1987, Helen was named Woman of the Year at the Presbyterian Church.  Helen was also honored as Woman of the Year by the Hudson Falls Business and Professional Women’s Club in 2001 and as a Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts, Adirondack Council, in 2002.  Along with her husband Robert M. Cackener, Helen was a dedicated volunteer for WMHT and the Adirondack Repertory Dance Theater, a docent at the Hyde Collection, and a volunteer usher for many years at SPAC.  Helen was also an active member of AAUW, Friends in Council, P.E.O., Delta Kappa Gamma, the Morning Literature Group, the YMCA Water Work-Out group, and her local ovarian cancer support group.

Helen was predeceased by her best friend and husband of 53 years, Robert M. Cackener; by her sister, Anne Lewis Livezey; and by her first husband, Daniel Glyndwr Lewis.  Survivors include three daughters, Deborah Lewis Poplasky and her husband, Thomas, of Canandaigua, Elizabeth Lewis-Michl and her husband, Thomas, of Delmar, and Margaret Lewis-Price of Tualatin, OR; seven grandchildren, Caitlin Poplasky Bartusch and her husband, Jeff; Betsy Adkins and her husband, Chad; Glyn Michl, Meredith Michl, Sarah Price, Hannah Price, and Rob Price; and one great-grandson, Thomas Adkins.

A list of Helen’s favorite things would be long indeed.  Helen ’s love of friends and family, her dedication to her students, and her enthusiasm for, to name just a few, books, ballet, chamber music, singing, poetry, modern art, architecture, and swimming in Lake George, will be long remembered.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, September 30, 2013, at Carleton Funeral Home Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church in Hudson Falls, with the Rev. Laura Lovell-Mitchell officiating.   Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Saratoga.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert P. Hamell

1945-Robert-P-HamellRobert-P-HamellGlens Falls – Lieutenant Colonel Robert P. Hamell, AUS, 90, formerly of South Street, Glens Falls and Argyle, NY passed away peacefully on September 21, 2013.

Born on March 1, 1923 in Glens Falls, he was the son of Hazel (Moon) and Carl B. Hamell of Queensbury.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Jacqueline (Legault) Hamell and his brother Carl A. Hamell.

He was a 1940 graduate of Glens FallsHigh School.

LTC Hamell is a veteran of the United States Army with active duty from July 1943 to November of 1945. He saw action on D-Day +5, the Battle of the Bulge and other European fronts all the way from Normandy and across the ElbeRiver. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Belgian Fourragere and the Belgian Croix de Guerre for action in World War II as a forward observer in the artillery.

LTC Hamell, AUS served in the Army Reserve from November 1945 to 1981, retiring as the Commander of the 1st Battalion, 389th Infantry Regiment, 98th Division. He was a proud member of Congressman Gerald B. Solomon’s service academy selection committee after retiring from the reserves.

He was also a member of the American Legion Post #1518 of Argyle, a life member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post #6196 of Queensbury, a member of the Benevolent and Protective order of the Elks Lodge #81, a life member of the Reserve Officer’s Association and past president of the Adirondack Chapter of that organization.

 Prior to a career with GE, he was in the automotive service industry. He retired in 1983 after 18 years in the capacitor department at GE.

 His hobbies included golf, fishing, bowling and woodworking and never saying no to a game of Scrabble.

 Survivors include his three daughters; Karen L. Gray and Sharon A. Fitzsimmons of Florida and Susan Carlton of Texas: Ten grandchildren; Phillip and Kari Camp of Queensbury, William and Sue Camp of Florida, Colonel Jeffrey and Andrea Camp of Dubai and Georgia, Kelly Fitzsimmons, Christine Camp of New York, Tyrone and Nat Fitzsimmons of Buffalo, Andrew and Lisa Camp of Queensbury, Michael Muratori and Scott and Tracy Dziekonski of Texas, Nathaniel and Jill Gray of Renton, Washington: 18 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his Aunt Lillian Powers of Warrensburg.

 The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Stanton Nursing Home, The Pines Nursing Home and the Landing, where LTC Hamell made lasting friendships with the staff and took great pleasure in how at home they made him feel.

 While we can’t express fully how grateful we are, we would also like to thank his best friend, chauffeur, shopper, shaver, and all-round caretaker, Cassi Fleury. She brightened his day, enjoyed Red Lobster, ice cream and many trips to the Crown PointBridge together. She was always ready to debate with “Mr.Bob” as she affectionately called him.

 Services will be held at noon on Friday, September 27th at the funeral home with Deacon Bazinet officiating.

 Burial, with full military honors will take place at 2:30 pm on September 27th in the Gerald B. H.SolomonSaratogaNationalCemetery, on Duell Road in the Town of Stillwater.
