Wilfred “Joe” Ball

QUEENSBURY – Wilfred “Joe” Ball, 58, of Eldridge Rd, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, September 11, 2015, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on July 8, 1957, in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Owen and Susan (Robillard) Ball.

Joe grew up Pawtucket, RI., where he attended school. He moved back to this area and spent the rest of his life here.

Joe was a dedicated mechanic, who loved working on cars. He was known for taking care of his own car, family’s cars and his friend’s cars. Joe also enjoyed teaching his sons and grandchildren how to repair cars. After he worked on them, you could be assured that they were in top shape.

Joe had a wonderful toothless smile that made everyone around him feel loved. Most recently took up fishing with his future son in law. Joe was also a wonderful cook, especially preparing the best spaghetti and hotdog sauce. He enjoyed listening to classic country music, watching the “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” and also shows on TV Land.

Joe loved his children and grandchildren. He was an amazing father with a heart of gold, who would do anything for anyone. He was a loving and devoted grandfather who will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his granddaughter, Raelyn Ball and his sister, Mary Ball.

Joe is survived by his beloved girlfriend, Linda Rohne; his children, Darlene “Patty” Fuller and her husband, Thomas, Jessica Ball and her fiancé, Peter Helm, Lisa Quill and her husband, Edward, Joseph Ball and his fiancée, Ashley Winchell and Owen Ball and his fiancée, Brieanna Loveland; his 14 grandchildren, Thomas, Taylor, Bradley, Cody, Andrew, Cameron, Kyle, Rylee, Isaiah, Becca, Caleb, Jayden, Paisley and Joshua; his eight brothers and sisters, Susan Bridge, JoAnne Allard, Madeline Johnson, Tyrone Ball, Owen Ball, Brian Ball, Donna Boulanger and Shawn Ball; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Sunday (today) from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls. To respect Joe’s wishes, please dress for calling hours as Joe would have seen you everyday.

Burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Fort Edward will be later in the week at a time to be announced.

Stephen R. “Ozzie” Osborne

HUDSON FALLS – Stephen R. “Ozzie” Osborne – I just lost my best friend after a tough four month battle with lung cancer. Stephen Osborne passed from this mortal plane, Saturday, September 5, 2015.

Ozzie was born Nov. 13, 1947 to Howard and the late Ellie (Lyon) Osborne. Oz was a lifelong communicant of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls and was by nature a very spiritual person.

After graduating from Hudson Falls High School in 1965, Oz did a two year stint in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1968. He then began his college career, which was off and on for 20 years, ending with his Associate in Arts Degree, Summa Cum Laude. At this time, Ozzie also began his 30 year career as a cook and chef. Oz worked for a number of restaurants in the Lake George area, among them the Georgian, East Cove, Colonial Arms, Hiland Park Country Club, McGowan’s, Jeremiah’s, The Holiday Inn of Lake George and also the three star, Villa Maison in Florida. Ozzie finished his working career with 8 years at Bard, to help him with retirement funds.

As well as enjoying cooking, Ozzie was an avid reader, card player and pool player extraordinaire. Being a spiritual man, he enjoyed reading tarot cards for friends and aquaintanances, studying comparative religions and reading extensively from the Egyptian and Tibetian Books of the Dead. He also had an interest in witchcraft and magic.

Oz was fun to be around, especially at parties and dinners and always there for his friends, with an offer to help. He enjoyed a laid back lifestyle and rarely if ever lost his temper. He also enjoyed his diversions in Florida, living and working there on numerous occasions.

In addition to his degree from ACC, his accomplishments include: ACC Award of Academic Excellence in Psychology, Extern Culinary Instructor at ACC and Academic Achievement Award for Disabled Student at SUNY Albany.

He was also an active member of the American Culinary Federation and was on our team at the Hitching Post where we won the Gourmet Diner’s Club Silver Spoon Award.

Ozzie was predeceased by his mother, Ellie and his brother, Stanley.

He is survived by his father, Howard, his sister in law, Linda Osborne and her children, Adam and Kim, his aunt, Gwen Cicotte, his uncles, Ed Lyon and Ronald Lyon; and many cousins, including, Warren Cicotte, Bonnie DeRocco, Debbie Lyon and Ginny Lou Kramer. He is also survived by his great friends, Cliff Mull, George McGowan, Jeff Bentley, Timmy Farone, Bob Stein, Bobby Heunemann, John and Dottie Fickle, the members of the Stony Creek Band and many others, too numerous to mention; his best friend and gallivanting buddy of almost 50 years, Roy Gorton, “Hippie”, who oversaw Ozzie’s care in his final months and will miss him dearly.

Also a special thanks to Dan Dubrul and Kathy Storlie for their friendship, care and assistance.

Friends may call on Monday, Sept. 14^th, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tues., Sept. 15^th at St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls.

Joseph Jacques Legault

MOREAU – Joseph Jacques Legault, 83,formerly of Hudson Falls and more recently of Lamplighter Acres, with sadness, the family would like to announce the passing of Jacques on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at the Glens Falls Hospital, with his family by his side.

Born on November 3, 1931, in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Ulric and Juliette (Lemery) Legault.

He served with the United States Army during the Korean War.

On July 8, 1951, he married Helen E. Tougaw at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hudson Falls.

Jacques retired from Glens Falls Portland Cement Company.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls.

Jacques enjoyed hunting and most of all, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a wonderful father and always enjoyed family get togethers, doing projects for his children and a good game of pitch

He was a life member of American Legion Post 574 in Hudson Falls and also a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

In addition to his parents, Jacques was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Helen and by his two brothers, Micky and Donald.

Survivors include his sons, Mark Legault and his wife, Peggy of Florida, James Legault and his wife, Donna of South Glens Falls and David Legault and his wife, Mary Lynn of Hudson Falls; his daughters, Linda Lemery and her husband, Paul of Florida, Sandra Stimpson and her husband, Barry of South Glens Falls, Cynthia Kearns and her husband, Terry of Fort Edward and Diane Monrian and her husband, Garry of Fort Edward; his grandchildren, Kristine, David, Jeremy, Nichole, Jason, Terena, Dustin, Sarah, Leah, Brian, Robert, Holly, Tara, Dawson, Lara, George, Michael and Eric; his great grandchildren, David J, Rebecca, Andrew, Devin, Nicolas, Dylan, Brayden, Colin, Caleb and Noah; two brothers, Bernard Legault and his wife, Virginia of Queensbury and Roland Legault and his wife, Jeanie of South Glens Falls; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 pm on Friday, at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery on Burgoyne Ave. in the town of Fort Edward.

Jacques family would like to thank the Moreau Emergency Squad for all their care and assistance that he and Helen have received over the past years and the Glens Falls Hospital ER Department for the passion and care for their dad, at the time of his passing.

GLENS FALLS – Christopher David Bates, 43, of William Street, died at his home, with his family around him, on Monday, September 7, 2015.

Born on April 9, 1972, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Dave and Alice (Chatterton) Bates.

Christopher was a 1990 Graduate of Glens Falls High School.

He loved spending time at Indian Lake, attending rock concerts, listening to the Grateful Dead and most of all, fishing and camping with his kids, Dylan, Andy and Elise “Goosey”.

Christopher is survived by the most important people in his life, his children, Dylan Thomas Henry Bates, Andrew Logan Bates and his greatest love, Elise Lindsey “Goosey” Bates, all of Glens Falls; his parents, Dave and Alice Bates of Glens Falls; his grandmother, Shirley Bates of Queensbury; his siblings, Chad Bates and his wife, Dorey of Hudson Falls, Jamie Bates, Nick Bates and Olivia Anna Bates, all of Glens Falls and Josh Bates and his wife, Jennette Bates of Crochecton; his nephew, Pauly of Glens Falls; his nieces, baby Dakota of Glens Falls, Syd of Queensbury, Adriana of Crochecton, and Persephony of Ohio; and several aunts and uncles and cousins.

There will be a celebration of Christopher’s life at a later date.

QUEENSBURY – Charles R. Baker, 96 , of Longview Drive in Queensbury, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015, at the Pines Healthcare Center and Rehab in Glens Falls where he received outstanding care.

Born on December 12, 1918, in Hudson Falls, he was the son of the late Harry W. and Charlotte (Carhart) Baker.

In April of 1944 Charles married Elma E. Benton Baker with whom he had two children. Elma passed away in April 1980.

He married his second wife, Kathryn Carney Von Schenk in December 1981, and she passed way in August of 2000.

Charles graduated from Hudson Falls High School in 1936. At Ithaca College, he received his Bachelor Science Degree in 1941 and his Master Science Degree in 1953. At Teachers’ College of Columbia University he participated in Advanced Study 36 hours beyond his M.S. with a major in Physical Education

Charles worked from 1941-1942 and 1946-1947 for Washington Irving H. S., Tarrytown, NY where he was Director of Athletics, Head Football Coach, and a teacher of Physical Education from 1942-1946. He served in the U. S. Army as a Field Artillery Officer, Special Service Officer, Supervisor of Divisional Swimming Program and Physical Reconditioning Officer.

He continued his teaching career at Bergenfield High School in New Jersey as Chairman of the High School Health & Physical Education Department, System Director Health, Safety & Physical Education, Director of Athletics, Head Football Coach (14 years), Head Basketball Coach (five years) and Head Baseball Coach (nine years). From 1971-1982, he was System Director of Health, Safety & Physical Education. The school system included five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, with a staff of 25 health and physical education teachers.

For 20 Years, Charles was swimming pool director, waterfront director in both day camp and overnight camps as well as Head Counselor at Camp Wigwam, Harrison, ME.

Charles was involved in Ivy League Football, Little League Baseball, Boys Club Basketball and was also active in the Football Parents Club.

His many honors and awards included the Hudson Falls High School 1st Team All Northern Conference in Football and Basketball, Ithaca College two time Associated Press All East Selection in football and honorable mention to Little All American Team in Football, Ithaca’s first such honoree. He was presented The New Jersey Interscholastic Coaches Association Award for outstanding contributions to the coaching profession in 1968. He also received the New Jersey Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation Award for Distinguished Service and Leadership in Physical Education at Ithaca College in 1969. He was named to the 1930-1939 All Decade Football Team at Ithaca College. In 1971 he was named to Ithaca College Sports Hall of Fame. In 1972 he was involved in the NJ Directors of Athletics Association and received the Award for Dedication, Service & Loyalty. In 2013, he was inducted into the Bergenfield High School Hall of Fame for coaching.

While residing in New Jersey, Charles was very active in the First Congregational Church, serving on the Board of Deacons and as Captain of the many canvassing teams as well as a member of the Board of Trustees.

He served as a volunteer member of the Board of Directors of the East Bergen Teachers Federal Credit Union, now known as Paragon Federal Credit. He was chairman of that union from 1985 to 1988.

In addition to his parents and wives, Charles was predeceased by a sister, Edna Baker Miller and a brother, Harry W. Baker Jr.

He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Baker Tritch and her husband, Ronald and his son, C. Glenn Baker and his wife, Leslie; a sister, Eleanor Baker Doty and her husband, Andrew; brother, Robert K. Baker and his wife, Jacqueline; and several nieces and a nephew.

Services were private and under the direction of the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

Barbara M. (Dragon) Simione

SOUTH GLENS FALLS – Barbara M. Dragon Simione, 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 7, 2015 at Glens Falls Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Born In Glens Falls Hospital on April 1, 1924, she was the daughter of Edward and Madeline (Norton) Dragon.

Barbara was a graduate of Hudson Falls High School, she married her high school sweetheart Anthony “Tony” Simione in St. Mary’s Church of Hudson Falls. Married on July 3, 1942, they just celebrated 73 years of marriage.

They lived locally and settled in Fenimore where Tony worked in the family bakery (Hudson View Bakery/Simione Brothers).

Barbara devoted herself to her family, encouraging her son to excel on the trumpet in high school and encouraging her daughter in dance lessons, eventually establishing her own dance studio which she helped by organizing and supporting students and recitals. She loved children and helped many of the families she knew.

She also had a great love for animals and was know to take in strays.

Barbara was very generous and always ready to lend a helping hand. She could be remembered driving the nuns of St. Michaels around in her car, which they enjoyed, tending to their necessities.

She was predeceased by her parents, brother Leonard, and grand-daughter Abigail Jane Langschultz.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Tony of South Glens Falls; her son Tony Simione; daughter Rebecca (Simione) Bates and her husband, Donald; she will be missed by her grandchildren, Todd Simione and his wife, MaryJane; Marc Simione; Nanette Simione; Carrie (Bates) Langschultz and her husband Kenneth, and their daughter, Natalie Rose Langschultz, Sarah Bates and Her fiancé, Michael Okon, Antoinette (Bates) Seybolt and her husband, Craig and their children, Madelyn, Owen and Blake Seybolt.

Also to be gratefully remembered: her best friend of many years, and caretaker, who was like a daughter, Rose (Foster) Knight and her husband Dan. The family is also eternally grateful for the help of Sherry Bapp for being a wonderful caretaker as well.

FORT EDWARD – Mary Alice (Bain) Whitford, 82 of Fort Edward, passed away peacefully at the Fort Hudson Health Care Center in Fort Edward the on Sunday, September 06, 2015.

Born August 8, 1933 in Putnam NY, she was the daughter of the late John and Lillian Bain, Sr..

Mary married Elwyn “Whit” Whitford , January 8^th, 1955, in Putnam.

She was a school bus driver for the Hudson Falls Central School District for over 35 years. She also was a bus monitor for the handicapped buses in later years.

Mary was a member of the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed golf playing every Wednesday with her neighbor Shirley Wolfe and also loved bowling, She will be fondly remembered as everyone’s bus driver.

Mary was predeceased by a son Gary Whitford, a brother John Bain, Jr. and a sister Nancy.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Elwyn “Whit” Whitford of Fort Edward, two granddaughters Crystal Whitford-Thompson and her husband Dan also of Fort Edward and Laura Whitford and her fiancé Matthew Collins of Hudson Falls; a brother Charles Bain and his wife Donna of Putnam; and along with several nieces and nephews.

Mary’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff on A and S wings at Fort Hudson for their special care.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church at 227 Main Street, Hudson Falls. Refreshments will be served at the church hall during calling hours.

Funeral will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, at the Hudson Falls Methodist Church, with the Reverend Derick Hansen, pastor, officiating.

Kathy Lynn (Breason) Baker

KINGSBURY – Kathy Lynn (Breason) Baker of Kingsbury, 56, passed away peacefully, August 31, 2015, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on October 23, 1958, in Glens Falls and was the daughter of Jobie and Patricia (Loveland) Breason.

Kathy graduated from Hudson Falls High School and was employed by Verizon for over 20 years.

She enjoyed many different activities including, watching NASCAR’s number 88, snowmobiling and was a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Her favorite thing was spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events.

Kathy is predeceased by her sister, Jody Lynn Breason, her best friend, Lori Sipowicz, her paternal grandparents, George and Isabell (Stewart) Breason, her maternal grandparents, Frederick and Madeline (Wells) Loveland, her maternal grandmother, Ola A. (Aldrich) Tripp and her mother in law, Amy (Strong) Baker.

Sybil Waimon-Kaphan

QUEENSBURY – Sybil Waimon-Kaphan passed away Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, surrounded by her loving son, Larry Waimon and daughter-in-law Jeannie.

Sybil was born May 1, 1924 in New York City and grew up in E. Orange, New Jersey.

At age 16, she was awarded a full scholarship at Parson’s School of Design in New York City. She left to volunteer for the war effort and subsequently married her first husband, pilot Matt Waimon who was killed in 1983 at the hands of a drunken driver.

Prior to the tragedy, Sybil and Matt moved to Livingston, New Jersey, where they raised a daughter, Gail, and two sons, Larry and younger brother Chuck.

Sybil was very active in civic affairs and she and her husband were a founding family of Temple Beth Shalom, where she taught religious school.

Sybil became a chapter president of Livingston Hadassah and went on to serve the Northern New Jersey Region as vice president.

Following the death of her husband, she eventually married Monroe Kaphan and resided in Parsippany, New Jersey, until his death in 2008. Not wanting his mother to remain there by herself, son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Jeannie, designed and oversaw construction of a home addition which provided a safe and loving environment. The Adirondack styled “home-within the-home” furnished Sybil with much comfort and happiness, providing her with many joyous remembrances of family vacations spent in Bolton Landing.

Her son Larry, (a retired Millburn, Short-Hills, New Jersey patrolman), explains that this would not have been possible without the loving approval and participation of his wife, Jeannie, an RN veteran of 44 years in the oncology ward, who served hospice after retirement and became patient care coordinator for High Peaks Hospice. She subsequently volunteered her service as an RN for House of Grace Hospice. Jeannie’s compassion and abilities furnished Sybil with true end-of-life comfort. This permitted Larry to keep a promise not to ever place his mother into an assisted living environment.

Surviving family members also includes Gail’s life partner, Leonard Friedman; her son, Chuck, and his wife, Margit; her grandchildren, Jared and his wife, Victoria Waimon, their children Wesley and Isaac, Adam and his wife, Sara Waimon, (Cantor) Erik Contzius and his wife, Monica Flaherty and their son, Jacob; her grandson, Ari Contzius and his wife, Ashley, and their son, Cole; her stepchildren Jeff and Jill Kaphan, and her husband, John Ogonowski and their daughter, Ryley, and son-in-law, Martin and his wife Janet Contzius.

The family wishes to extend profound gratitude to Carol from Home Instead, the loving, caring home aids provided by Interim Health Care and High Peaks Hospice staff, (in particular, Nurse “Matt”). Overseeing Sybil’s care and arranging for these wonderful care providers, was the remarkable staff at Support Link in Queensbury, and a very special acknowledgment to the medical practice of Dr. Robert Evans and his compassionate staff.

In lieu of flowers and condolences, son Larry respectfully requests that any donations be sent to Steve Caporizzo’s PET CONNECTION or SPCA of Upstate, NY in Sybil’s memory.

There are no calling hours and there will be a private graveside service for family.

HUDSON FALLS – Gabino Vazquez Huerta, 48, of State Route 4, went to be with the Lord, on Thursday, August 13, 2015, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on February 17, 1967, in San Padro, Ocotlan, Puebla, Mexico, he was the son of Laurencio and Paulina (Huerta) Vazquez.

Gabino grew up in Mexico and as a teenager, he came alone to America. He began working in New York City and New Jersey to support his family in Mexico. Gabino started as a bus boy in a chain restaurant in New Jersey and New York City and the owner saw potential in him and promoted him to waiter. As the years progressed, he worked his way to become manager at “El Bandido” in Middletown, NY. Gabino, along with his brothers had the dream to own their own business. Together with his brother, Gabino found a place in Hudson Falls and he along with his brothers, turned it into the successful restaurant “El Mexicano”. Over the years they have expanded the restaurant into Saratoga Springs. Gabino also partnered with his wife, Celsa, and opened La Cosina Mexicana restaurant in Queensbury.

Gabino loved the restaurant business, working with his family and enjoyed meeting new friends. Most of all Gabino loved his family. He was a wonderful husband, loving father, who never gave up on life. He always said “Always Up, Never Down”. Gabino was also a talented artist, his artwork that displayed his roots, proud heritage and family can be seen adorning the walls of his restaurants. Not only was Gabino proud of his family and his restaurants, he was also proud to be an American citizen.

He is survived by his wonderful wife of 22 years, Celsa Vazquez of Hudson Falls; his two children, Leslie Vazquez and Christian Vazquez, both of Hudson Falls; his siblings, Esteban, Ermelinda, Senaido, Gustavo, Juan Pablo, Angelica, Roberto, Tomasa and Victorino; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; his special friends, Jose Gevara, Ernesto Ramirez, Lynn and Jim “El Payaso” Chase; Tony Mishoe, Sharon Rose, Tara Beckett, Ramiro Loachamin, Lilliana Loachamin and Speedy Gonzalez ; and his faithful canine companion, Suenos “Dreams”.

Friends may call on Monday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Tuesday, at St. Joseph’s Church in Fort Edward.

The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery, across from “El Mexicana”, so Gabino can keep an eye on things at the restaurant.

Because education was so important to Gabino, his family suggests that memorial donations be made to The Leslie and Christian Vazquez College Fund, Glens Falls National Bank, State Route 4, Hudson Falls, NY 12839.

GLENS FALLS – Timothy James “Tim” Weils, 49, of Glens Falls, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 12, 2015.

Born in Saratoga Hospital, he was the son of Burton and Hope Weils of Queensbury. Timothy attended Hudson Falls School.

Tim was a free spirit, who was quick to laugh and crack a joke. He loved his family, especially his three daughters. Tim enjoyed reading mystery books, hunting, fishing with his family and friends and playing pool with his daughter.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Albert and Evelyn Weils and Charles and Doris Rustin.

Survivors besides his parents, Burton and Hope Weils, include his daughters, Ashley Weils of Hudson Falls, Paige Weils and Elena Weils, both of Glens Falls; his brothers, Burton Weils, Jr. of Louisiana, Todd Weils of Queensbury, Jeffrey Weils of Lake George and Kevin “Skip” Weils of Queensbury; he also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Friends may call on Tuesday, August 18, 2015, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Memorial services will be conducted at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, following the calling hour, at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
