Betty M. (Blodgett) Balfour

BalfourSOUTH GLENS FALLS – Betty M. (Blodgett) Balfour, 88, of Pine Road in South Glens Falls and also a longtime resident of Fenimore, died on  Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born March 28, 1928 in Sudbury, VT.  She was the daughter of the late Stephen Blodgett and Dorothea (Humiston) Taggart.

At the age of eight she moved to New York State with her family.  In 1945, Betty married Ralph Balfour and they resided in Fenimore for 55 years.  Ralph passed away in November of 2000.

Betty was predeceased by her sisters, Jean Surano, Evelyn McCauley and her husband, Paul and Betty’s brothers, Gilbert “Peter” Shortsleeves, Fredrick Shortsleeves and Joseph Shortsleeves; and her sister-in-law, Mary Snyder.

Survivors include her children, Donna Hickok and her husband, Leslie of Arizona, Ralph Daniel Balfour of Florida and Sandra Clark and her husband, James of South Glens Falls; her grandchildren, Christopher Hickok and his wife, Kathryn, James E. Clark, Jr. and his wife, Beth, Kassey Granger, Daniel Balfour and his wife, Stephanie and Craig Balfour and his wife, Brianne; 11 grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Gloria Shortsleeves; and her friends in the Bridge Club.

Friends may call on Friday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 12 Noon Friday at St. Michael’s the Archangel Church in South Glens Falls, with Rev. Tony Childs, pastor, officiating.

Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the South Glens Falls.

The family requests instead of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Lions Club’s Flying Fingers c/o of the Glens Falls Lions Club, P.O., Box 528, Glens Falls, NY  12801 or to the charity of your choice.

Michael W. Scheidegger

scheideggerHUDSON FALLS – Michael W. Scheidegger,45, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany.

He is survived by his parents; his sister Krista Valla, her husband Wade Valla, and their daughters Grace and Kaitlin; his brother Erik Scheidegger, his wife Connie, and their daughters Taya and Genoa; his three uncles Charles Otto Scheidegger, Richard Scheidegger and his wife Carol, and Robert Scheidegger and his wife Suzanne; his step-grandmother, Maria Voordeckers; as well as numerous cousins.

Born on May 12,1970 at Glens Falls Hospital, he was the first son of William and Trudy(Cleaves) Scheidegger, of Hudson Falls

Michael’s childhood was spent in the kid friendly neighborhood bordering the Hudson Falls High School. He was an active member of Boy Scout Troop 4, where he especially enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing, and rock climbing.  He spent summers camping with his family in the Adirondacks and on Cape Cod.

Michael graduated Hudson Falls High School in 1988. He was a high jumper on the track team, played football and soccer, and was a member of the stage and marching bands.

After high school, he enlisted in the Army and received basic training at Fort Jackson, SC. He attended paratrooper school, earned his wings, and joined the 82no Airborne at Fort Bragg, NC.  He proudly served with the 82no in lraq during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

He was an avid sports fan, including NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt Sr., as well as the NY Yankees, NY Giants, and NY Rangers. He also had a passion for cooking, and loved to try new recipes, ingredients, and techniques.  He could always be found in the kitchen at the holidays and family dinners.

Michael loved animals all his life. Over the years his pets included an alligator, several snakes, tarantulas, scorpions, ferrets, chinchillas, rats, exotic fish, and most recently, two Maine Coon kittens. He also rescued and raised animals to be released to the wild, including crows, flying squirrels, and an injured cedar waxwing that lived with the family for many years.

A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Hudson Falls (on the park) on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. with the rev. Michael Plank, pastor, officiating.

A reception will follow the services at the church hall.

Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in the town of Stillwater.

The family would like to thank the staff of the VA Primary Care Clinic in Glens Falls, and the nurses, staff, and doctors of the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany for their care and concern for Michael.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Hudson Falls Project Lift Fund, 9 River St., Hudson Falls.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

Lucille “Lucy” Nina Schult

SchultHARTFORD – Lucille “Lucy” Nina Schult, 69, passed away peacefully, on April 11, 2016, at Glens Falls Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on June 8, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Gibson) Rock.

Lucille graduated from Hartford Central School class of 1964.

She was employed by Native Textiles for over 30 years, Warren/Washington/Albany ARC, and most recently, retired from Lowes Garden Center in Queensbury, after 15 years of service.

Lucille met her husband, Roy Schult, at Native Textiles and they were married June 28, 1980.  Married for 35 years, Roy and Lucy enjoyed a simple but wonderful life together.  Many of her most treasured memories were of their trips to “play the slots” in Atlantic City.  Lucy was an avid “staycationer”.   Sitting on the deck with her morning coffee, lounging by the pool and hosting family BBQ’s, meant more to her than any luxury cruise.

After the birth of her first grandchild, she was known as “Nana” by all of her loved ones.  Lucy delighted in the simple things of life.  When asked if she could “do anything or go anywhere” she replied, “I just want to be home, reading my books and doing my scratch off tickets”.

She had an unmatched work ethic and was extremely generous.  She dreamed of handing out money on the street corner if she won the lottery.  If you needed it, she probably had it.  Either in her purse or her shed, she would say “wait right here”, and the next thing you knew, she was standing in front of you with whatever you needed.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Rock.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 35 years ,Roy Schult, of Hartford; her daughter, She Hahn and her husband, Scot, of Hartford; her sons Roy Schult Jr and his wife, Renee, of Hartford and Eric Schult and his partner, Barb, of Hartford; eight grandchildren, Courtney, Kelby, Marina, Austin, Leanne, Dylan, Dustin and Dagan;  her brothers, Stanley Rock and his wife, Janet, of Hartford and Rolland Rock and his wife, Mary, of Hudson Falls; her sister, Virginia Lambert and her husband, Daniel, of Queensbury; as well as many nieces and nephews and their families.

At Lucille’s request there will be no public services.

The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of Glens Falls Hospital and HCR for the excellent care and compassion Lucille received.

Claudia Villa Bizzarro

MallanderGLENS FALLS – Claudia Villa Bizzarro, of Glens Falls, formerly of Larchmont, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, April 11, 2016, of natural causes.

Born on February 1, in Torino, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Fioravante and Albina (Riccio) Bizzarro.

Claudia began performing at an early age with her family troupe, throughout Italy and around the world.  She enjoyed performing and singing with her sisters.  Later she branched out into a solo singing career.  She moved to the United States as an adult, where she continued singing. Claudia grew in notoriety in Italian circles in New York City.  She recorded several records in Spain, even dedicating a record to the Lake George area, a place she held dear to her heart.

Claudia owned and operated the former Granger Cottages on Lake George for many years.

She was a communicant of St. Alphonsus Church and St. Mary’s Church in Glens Falls, where she served as canter for many years.

Although she was a small woman, Claudia was larger than life.  She will be missed by all.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Carolina Tedone, Giselle Bizzarro and Maria Didonato.

Survivors include her son, Jesse Maiolo and his companion, Sandy Otero of Glens Falls; her beloved granddaughter, Lauren Maiolo of New Rochelle; her three sisters, Josephine Ricker of New Rochelle, Iole Tedone and Adele Pugno, both of Italy; two brothers, Pasquale Bizzarro of New Rochelle and Sal Bizzarro of Colorado; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will take place in New Rochelle at a later date.

Gertrude I. Purdy

QUEENSBURY – Gertrude I. Purdy, 96, formerly of Sherwood Acres, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2016 at the Stanton Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre in Queensbury.

Born on September 24, 1919, in Argyle, she was the daughter of the late James and Lena(Bell) Wilson.

Gertrude was a graduate of Hartford Central School and in 1937, she married Milton W. Purdy, in Schuylerville.   He passed away December 25, 1990.

For over 35 years, she was a member of the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church.     Later she attended Caldwell Presbyterian Church in Lake George and Harrisena Community Church in Queensbury.  At every church she attended, she was active in their church choirs and was known for her beautiful singing voice.  She also sang with the Adirondack Chorale.

Gertrude was also an avid golfer throughout most of her life.  It was a dark day for her, when at the age of 87, she had to hang up her clubs.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Carole Ford, her eight brothers and sisters and many cousins, aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her children, John Purdy and his wife, Diane of New Milford, CT and Linda VanHeuvel and her husband, Ned of Saratoga Springs; her grandchildren, Jonathan Lindblom, Jill Lindblom, Christian Rice and Caroline Mannion; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 3 to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016 at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Memorial services will follow the calling hour at 4 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home, with the Reverend Derek Hansen, pastor of the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church, officiating.

Alida Joan Canary

Alida CanaryHUDSON FALLS – Alida Joan Canary, 54, of Poplar Street, passed away peacefully in her sleep, at her home, after a battle with cancer, on Sunday, April 10, 2016.

Born on November 29, 1961 in Kingston, she was the daughter of the late James and Ruth (Mauterstock) Burns.

Alida was a member of the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church.  Her commitment to the church was well known by her pastor, friends and acquaintances in the congregation.

She was an avid baseball fan.  She especially loved watching the Yankees, “Go Yankees!”. Alida also enjoyed camping with her husband, John.  Family was the center piece of her life.

Survivors include her loving husband, John Canary; her children, Jeremiah Bach, Erica Burlew and Ryan Burlew; her step children, Bret Canary and Michael Canary; and her beloved grandchildren, Rebecca, Shea, Suzie, Dylan, Scout, Tanner, Joshua and Hunter; her aunt, who was like a second mother, Joan Mauterstock; her brother, Dave “Butch” Burns as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joel R. Barber

BarberTOWN OF MOREAU – Joel R. Barber, 70 of Laurel Road, passed away peacefully, in his wife’s arms on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at his home.

Born on February 12, 1946, in Glens Falls Hospital, he was the third son of the late John R. and Doris Ada (Chadwick) Barber.

Joel grew up on the Vaughn Road in Hudson Falls and was a member of the Hudson Falls High School class of 1963.   After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Upon being released from active duty in 1968, he furthered his career in the U.S. Navy Reserve, retiring in 1986.

Following his discharge from active duty, Joel began a career in 1970, with the New York State Dept. of Corrections, retiring in 2003 with 33 years of service.   After retiring, he went on to work part-time for the Warren County Sheriff’s Dept. as a Security Officer, until his death.

Joel was an avid bowler and bowled on two leagues, one for 40 years and the other for 32.  He enjoyed hunting deer in Newcomb at the camp and playing golf.  Family was his life.  His grandchildren were his pride and joy.  He spent many hours at their sporting games and doing crazy things with them.  Joel also enjoyed boating on Glen Lake on his pontoon boat with his family and friends.  After selling the boat, he had a pool installed at the house for everyone to enjoy.

He married his wonderful wife, Linda in 1995. They resided in the Town of Moreau.

Joel was a member in good standing in the Fraternal Order of Eagles of South Glens Falls Post #2486, Adirondack V.F.W. Post #2475, Hudson Falls American Legion Post #574 and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #81.

Besides his parents he was pre-deceased by two brothers, Jack R. Barber and Otis B. Barber.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda T. Barber; his devoted children, Steven and Laura Prouty and their children (Austin and Alexa), also Matthew and Andria Prouty and their children (Evan and Andrew); his sisters in law, Linda J. Barber, Etta Barber and Lynn Chase and her husband, Jim; his special niece, Ashley Hervieux; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Fraternal Order of Eagles of South Glens Falls Post 2486 conduct a service at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday during calling hours.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Moss Street Cemetery in the town of Kingsbury.

Jack “Fishie” Fischer

FischerFORT EDWARD – Jack “Fishie” Fischer, 80, of Fort Edward, passed away unexpectedly on April 6, 2016, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on September 6, 1935 in Fort Edward, he was the son of the late Raymond and Madeline (Deyoe) Fischer.

Jack attended Fort Edward High School and on December 6, 1969, he married Gladys Tennyson in Fort Edward.

For 45 years, he worked at East Side Auto and was Henry’s right hand man.  Jack loved his job and will be remembered as a wonderful employee and always willing to help everyone that came to find that special car or truck part.  He had a special place in his heart for his 1940 Olds.

Jack was a proud 50 year member of the Fort Edward Fire Department, where he was always there to help. 

Years ago he ran a wrecker at the local race tracks.  Jack was an avid NASCAR fan, especially rooting on Dale Earnhardt,Sr.   He will be fondly remembered as a special, loving person, who enjoyed being around his children and grandchildren. 

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his two brothers, Raymond Fischer, Jr. and Arthur Fischer and his sister, Lena Heinrich.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Gladys Fischer of Fort Edward; three children, Susanne Facer and her husband, Dennis of Clifton Springs, Jack Fischer, Jr. and his wife, Charmayne of Hudson Falls and Larry Ornsby and his wife, Charlene of Bismark, ND; his grandchildren, Adrienne and Alexis Fischer, Walter Fischer, Edward Dreher, Jack and Taylor Snow and Larry , Jack and Sammy Ornsby; two great grandchildren, Aiden Snow and Lilly Miner; brothers in law, George Heinrich and Vincent Tennyson; sister in law, Eleanor Fischer; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Saturday, April 9, 2016, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Services will follow the calling hours at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Joseph “Joe” A. Woutersz

WouterszQUEENSBURY – Joseph “Joe” A. Woutersz, 67, of Wintergreen Road, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at his home, with his loving family by his side.

Born on September 17, 1948 in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of Jeannine (Mullen) Woutersz and the late Alex Woutersz.

For more than 20 years, Joe owned J. Albert & Sons Hardware on South Street in Glens Falls and also worked as a locksmith. His passion was real estate.  He owned and managed Hearth & Home Real Estate for eight years before merging with Hunt ERA, where he was the managing broker of the Glens Falls office.

Joe was a long time member of Warren County Association of Realtors.   He served on the association’s board of directors, as past chair on the Education and Community Relations Committees and as past president and board member of Warren County Multiple Listing Service.   Joe was a certified NYS Trainer, and taught real estate courses at Manfred in Latham and at SUNY Adirondack. He held the GRI, ABR, and CRB designations from the National Association of Realtors. Joe was a long time member of ARCC, Toastmasters, Kiwanis, and BNI.    He founded Out of the Ashes (for fire victims) and through this, volunteered for After the Fire, which also supports victims of fires, and has volunteered with the Skating Association for the Blind and Handicapped. Charitable, self-sacrificing, compassionate, merciful, tenderhearted, giving, generous to a fault, are all words used by friends, coworkers, and family to describe him.

Besides his mother, Jeannine Woutersz, Joe is survived by his wife, Elaine (Ballard) Woutersz; his children, Paul Woutersz and his wife, Rebecca, Elisa Burke and her husband, Bruce, Mark Jacox and his fiancé, Michelle Anderson, Kimberly O’Reilly and her husband, Todd and Stephen Jacox and his wife, Tracy; his grandchildren, Cassius Woutersz, Phineas Reilly, Jeremy Burke, Stephen Jacox Jr., Sydney O’Reilly, Samantha Burke, Jacquelyn O’Reilly, Leonard Anderson; his two brothers, David Woutersz and Malcolm Orton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Celebration of Joe’s life will be on Friday, April 15, 2016 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bay Meadows Club, 31Cronin Road in Queensbury.

Kathleen Mildred Curley

CurleyQUEENSBURY – Kathleen Mildred Curley, 85, formerly of Robert Gardens South, went into the arms of the Lord on Monday, April 4, 2016, at Warren Center in Queensbury.

Kathleen was born on August 19, 1930, in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania, the third child of the late George Edward and Alice May (Moore) Curley. During the Great Depression, the family returned to Hartford, NY, the home of her father’s parents, Fergus and Mary Clark Curley. She was pre-deceased by two brothers, Robert Lee Curley in 1975 and James Richard Curley in 1976.

Kathleen cherished three things during her life; her family, her friends, and her cats, especially Minnie. In later years she attended Glenview Elder Club.

Kathleen was a communicant of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls.

Kathleen loved to tell stories about her humble childhood, going shopping (but not spending money).  She also enjoyed going out to eat and a good meal, especially at Steve’s Place.  Kathleen loved her sweets, ice cream and Pepsi. She was very close to her parents.  Kathleen was a unique individual, who was always surrounded by people who loved her.

Survivors include a nephew, Shannon Lee Curley; one uncle, Walter Moore; and cousins, Edward (Sonny) Bowe, and Sister Marie Bowe.

Friends may call from 4 to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2016, at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc. at 68 Main St. in Hudson Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. following the calling hour, on Monday, at the funeral home.

The Rite of Committal will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

Zechariah John Conklin and Abel Rae Conklin

ConklinLYNDONVILLE, VT – Zechariah John Conklin and Abel Rae Conklin, twin infant sons of James Michael Conklin and Lisa Marie Leibold of Lyndonville, Vermont, passed away at birth on April 3, 2016, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

In addition to their parents, they are survived by two big brothers, Anthony and Ryan Conklin; their maternal grandparents, Claudia Kay and her husband, Michael of Altone, NH and Philip Leibold of Plainfield, VT; their paternal grandparents, Debra Conklin and Albert Thaxton, both of Hudson Falls; their aunts and uncles, John and Cody Leibold, Christopher and Christine Leibold, Annie and Jerry Thaxton Colombe, Nicole Thaxton and Gerald Taylor; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be 4 p.m. on Friday, at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Alice “Nancy” Meagher White

white, Alice 2 White 1HUDSON FALLS & HEBRON– Alice “Nancy” Meagher White, 95, of Hudson Falls and formerly of Brooklyn and Hebron, peacefully joined her husband in eternal rest on Friday, April 1, 2016, at the home of her son and daughter in law, Anthony and Kim White.

Born on August 19, 1920 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late John Francis Meagher and Alice Forsyth Meagher.

Nancy was proud to have graduated with honors from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn, the school that “Welcome Back Kotter” was based on. She wrote a column for the school newspaper “Book Ends by Nancy Meagher,” and was a member of the National Arista Honor Society. Nancy was also member of the Daughters of the British Empire.

In 1963, she married Gerald White on Long Island.  He passed away in 2003, after 40 wonderful years of marriage.

Nancy, along with her husband, lived in Lakeview, Long Island for many years. While in Long Island, Nancy was the secretary for the Administrator of Building and Grounds at Rockville Center Public School System.  She was employed there for many years and when Gerald retired, they bought a colonial saltbox home and farm and moved to Hebron to spend their retirement years together.

Nancy was an avid reader and loved music.  She played the piano and sang in the choir at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Malvern, NY. She also was a wonderful cook who made the most perfect Genoese spaghetti.  The center of her life was watching over her grandchildren.  She adored them and took interest in everything they did.

Survivors include her brother, John Forsyth Meagher and his wife, Sandra of Rowayton, Connecticut and Hebron, NY, her son, Anthony Meagher White and his wife, Kimberley Waters-White of Hudson Falls, and their three sons, Kieran, Korey and Kerry White; her son, Douglas Sommer of Smithtown, NY, her daughter in law, Anita Sommer of Smithtown and their children, Jonathan Sommer and his wife, Breanne, and Evan Sommer and his fiancée, Jessica Ziegler.

Memorial Services will be private.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Fort Edward Rescue Squad, Inc., P.O. Box 226, Fort Edward, NY 12828 and to the American Cancer Society.

Robert E. Mulcahy

Mulcahy Mulcahy2QUEENSBURY – Robert E. Mulcahy of Queensbury, passed away, Monday, March 28, 2016, at his home unexpectedly.

Robert was born on September 21, 1931, in Glens Falls.  He was born to the late Anna J. Curtin and John J. Mulcahy.

He married Marjorie Rose Cooper on July 5, 1952.  They lived in Queensbury most of their married life.

Robert owned and operated Mulcahy’s Auto Body Shop for over 50 years in Queensbury.

Besides his parents, Robert was predeceased by his siblings, John Mulcahy, Richard Mulcahy, David Mulcahy, Mary Crissey and Judy Carlson.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Mulcahy; his three children, Sally Barker and her companion, Richard Berg of Queensbury, George Mulcahy of Queensbury and Douglas Mulcahy and his companion, Linda Rolleston of Queensbury; his sister, Patricia McAndrews of MA, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call on Monday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral, Inc., 68 Main Street, in Hudson Falls.

At the request of the family, there will be no formal funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to the charity of your choice.
