Josephine “Jo” (DeLorenzo) LaVine

lavineSOUTH GLENS FALLS – Josephine “Jo” (DeLorenzo) LaVine, 85, of South Glens Falls, passed away Saturday September 3, 2016, unexpectedly at Glens Falls Hospital.

She was born January 1, 1931, in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Frank and Carmela (Arrigo) DeLorenzo.

As a young woman, Jo worked at Dolans Drugstore. She once made a banana split for a customer and forgot to put in the banana. That customer, Ernest LaVine, became her husband. After Ernie’s retirement he and “Josie,” as he would call her, became inseparable. They liked to go out for breakfast, enjoyed scenic drives to Vermont, and grocery shopping together. Ernie passed away in 2011 after 62 years of marriage to “Josie.”

Josephine and her family resided on Numan Street in Glens Falls.

Jo attended St. Michael the Archangel Church in South Glens Falls. Her family was very important. The best day of the week was Sunday, with Mass in the morning, and later serving pasta with her well-loved homemade sauce and meatballs for dinner. Ernie and “the boys” always said there was no one who could outdo Mom’s Sunday dinners.

In addition to her parents, Josephine was predeceased by her son Larry LaVine, and her brother Jack DeLoenzo.

She is survived by her children: Ernie LaVine and his wife, Karen of Queensbury, Garry LaVine of Cohoes, Jody LaVine of South Glens Falls, Jeff LaVine and his wife, Mindy of Glens Falls; her grandchildren: Shelly Marcantonio and her husband, John, Heather LaVine and her husband, Vic Christopher, Christopher LaVine, Courtney LaVine, Ashley LaVine, Samuel LaVine, Ava LaVine; her great-grandson Christopher Marcantonio; her sister Eleanor Simione and her husband, Alfred of South Glens Falls; her brother and sister in law, Micheal and Joyce Massiano of Queensbury; her brother in law Robert Merwin of South Glens Falls; her sisters in law: Shirley DeLorenzo of South Glens Falls, and Bertha LaVigne of Warrensburg; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her good friend of 58 years, Louisa Cirelli of South Glens Falls.

Friends may call on Thursday from 4-7 PM at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Friday at St. Michael the Archangel Church in South Glens Falls with the Rev. Tony Childs, pastor, officiating.

The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s cemetery in South Glens Falls.

Lawrence “Larry” PHILLIPS

phillips-larryHUDSON FALLS – Lawrence “Larry” Phillips, 83, formerly of Lower Oak Street, passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at the Washington Center in Argyle.

Born on July 23, 1933 in Fort Edward, he was the son of the late Glen and Nina (Busch) Phillips.

Larry enlisted in the United States Navy and felt honored to have protected our country aboard the USS Monterey and the USS Pawcatuck.  Following his discharge from the service, he was very proud to have gone back to school and received his GED.

For many years, Larry worked in the shipping department of HENSSGENHardware in Queensbury.   He enjoyed going to work and was fortunate to have met many friends, during his career.

Larry was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Giants.  He was very talented in understanding electronics and how they worked.  Larry could hook up anything.  He was a quiet man who had many friends.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Glen Wallace Phillips, Jr. and John Phillips.

Survivors include his brother, Robert Phillips and his wife, Marilyn of Fort Edward; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, from 2 to 4 p.m.  at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Larry will be laid to rest, with full military honors, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016, at Union Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, 7 Washington Square, Albany, NY  12205-5512.

John W. Doyle, Jr.

Doyle, JohnHUDSON FALLS – John W. Doyle, Jr, 56, of Hudson Falls, died peacefully at the Glens Falls Hospital on Sunday, September 4, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.  

Born November 18, 1959, in Glens Falls, he was the son of John W. Doyle, Sr. of Hudson Falls and the late Shirley (Duell) Doyle. 

John graduated in 1977 from Hudson Falls High School. 

He served in the U.S. Air Force. 

On February 12, 1983, John married Earlene MacDuff at St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls.

He worked as a tractor trailer driver for 26 years, mostly with the Red Star Express. 

John was a communicant of St. Mary’s/St Paul’s church. John cherished his four grand kids. He had a great sense of humor and never said a bad word about anyone. To John family, friends and home were very important. 

In addition to his mother, John was predeceased by his mother in law, Rose Marie MacDuff. 

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Earlene (MacDuff) Doyle of Hudson Falls; his father, John W. Doyle, Sr. of Hudson Falls; his three children: Shawn Michael Doyle of Hudson Falls, Erica Leigh Doyle Mason of Hudson Falls, John Walter Doyle, III of Hudson Falls; his grandchildren: Troy David Stevens, Savannah Rayne Stevens, John Walter Doyle, IV, and Jacob Matthew Doyle; his sister Diane Doyle and her fiancé, Dana Hyde of Hudson Falls; his brother Richard J. Doyle and his wife, Stephanie of Hudson Falls; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Friends may call on Wednesday from 4-7 PM at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Brett S. Flaherty

FlahertyQUEENSBURY – Brett S. Flaherty, 55, a devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend passed away peacefully Aug 29, 2016, at Glens Falls Hospital surrounded by his loving family after an intense battle with lung cancer.

Born on December 28, 1960 in Glens Falls, he was the son of Thomas K. and Patricia H (Hopkins). Flaherty.

Brett attended Queensbury Senior High School and graduated with the class of 1979.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1980, specializing in Russian linguistics as a Signit Voice Interceptor. While serving abroad he was stationed in Augsburg, Germany where he met his wife Pam, who also was enlisted in the U.S. Army. Brett had fond memories of Op Stop and Our Place. He served his country for 9 years reaching the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1989.

Following his military career, Brett attended the Zone 5 Law Enforcement Academy and became a deputy of the Warren County Sheriff’s Department. He served the local community for 26 years. He began his police career in 1989 as a Communications Officer in the Warren County Communications Center- 911 Dispatch. In 1992, he transferred to road patrol assigned to the night shift. Although he retired on 8/29/13 he returned back to the Department for a short period of time as a Communications Officer until 2015.

After his retirement, Brett worked alongside his father and Dave Sommer at T.K. Flaherty Associates. Dave was like a brother to Brett and on one particular job while working in a trench Dave saved Brett’s life when he suffered a critical injury to his leg. As Brett would say, Brett -1, pipe saw -0.

If you were acquainted with Brett whether it be as a family member, co-worker, community member or friend you knew that he was always there to help. Your needs came before his. He was always prepared to sacrifice his life and time for others. Quoting one of his friends “Brett served his country in the U.S. Army, devoted a career to protecting his community as a deputy sheriff and somehow still made time to help friends in need. Selfish was a word that he likely did not know because no one ever had occasion to use it in the same breath as his name.” Quoting another friend “Brett wasn’t the life of the party but he was the guy that held the party and made sure everyone was having fun.” During his 26 year career as a deputy he responded to many unfathomable calls. He rarely spoke of his job whether it was saving the life of an overdose victim or backing up his fellow deputies. He did however, find a couple of particular situations humorous including the night he was chasing a suspect through the woods who was wearing light up sneakers and the time he needed to apprehend trespassers on West Mountain in which he played a recording of his family German Shepherd Zeus over the speaker of the police car and told them they had moments to come out or he was releasing the dog. The trespassers surrendered, came out of the woods and asked where the dog was. He responded “What dog?” Brett enjoyed his boat “Yes Dear”, cooking for his fellow officers (the spicier the better), snowmobiling, riding his motorcycle and could 2-step circles around anyone on a dance floor. The world is a lesser place, while the lives he has touched have been enriched by his presence. Brett would want the party of life to continue so rather than grieve his absence, raise your glass and toast in his memory. Take deep breaths, lean on your friends, look up for strength and love your family.

His daughters Nicole and Kaitlin were the center of his world. He was extremely proud of their accomplishments, which included Nicole receiving her PhD as well as Kaitlin’s talent in the sport of tennis and the arts. He supported and encouraged them in all their endeavors throughout their lives.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Scott and Geraldine Hopkins, his paternal grandparents Ira and Blanche White, and his in-laws Maurice and Rose Thompson.

Brett is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Pamela (Thompson) Flaherty; his daughter, Dr. Nicole (Flaherty) Shakerley and her husband Nate of Clifton Park, his daughter, Kaitlin R. Flaherty of Queensbury; his parents, Thomas K. & Patricia H. Flaherty of Queensbury; his brother Scott K. Flaherty and his wife Anne of Yelm, WA; his sister, Stacy L. Flaherty of Queensbury; his granddaughter, Sabrina Shakerley of Clifton Park, his brothers in law Pat Thompson and his wife Teresa Wallert Thompson of El Dorado, KS, and Paul Thompson of Mandan, ND; his nephews, Derek & Tyler Flaherty of Alabama, and Kyle Byrne of Queensbury; his nieces, Keara & Kindra Byrne of Queensbury, his maternal aunt, Nancy Toole and her husband Jim of Glens Falls, and his cousin Darren Graham-Messercola and his husband David of Schenectady.

Family and friends may call from 5pm to 8pm, Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016, at the Carleton Funeral Home Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11am, Wednesday, Sept 7, 2016, at the funeral home.

Burial with full military honors will follow at 1 p.m. at Gerald B. H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Saratoga.

Irene La Cross

LaCrossHUDSON FALLS – Irene La Cross, 85, passed peacefully into the Lord’s arms, surrounded by her loving family, on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Haynes House of Hope in Granville.

She was born on September 29, 1930, in Hudson Falls,to Francis and Laura (Monette) Clough.

Irene graduated from Hudson Falls High School in 1948 and worked for a while at Griffin’s Lumber Co. in Hudson Falls.

In 1951, she married Robert La Cross, also of Hudson Falls. Robert was in college in Trenton, New Jersey, at the time and the couple lived there through 1952. In Trenton, their first child, Michael, was born. The couple were married for 65 years.  After college, they moved to Staten Island, where their second child, Diane, was born. Robert worked in the accounting field.  After four years in New York City, they returned home to Hudson Falls, to raise their two children.

In 1968 the family moved to Southern California.   Irene and Robert lived there for 30 years, returning to Hudson Falls again in 1998.

During her long life, Irene was busied herself raising two children and babysitting her three grandchildren.   She had many interests, including making quilts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.   Perhaps family and friends most remember her for the fact that she and Robert moved many times in their married life, owning (and usually renovating) at least 17 homes in their years together.

The kitchen was always her home base, and she excelled as a cook and dessert maker, known best for her fudge at Christmas.   Irene always had a vegetable garden in the summer, from which she generously gifted family, friends and neighbors with produce, especially tomatoes.   She also loved doing the cross-word puzzles and Sudoku in the daily newspaper.

Irene’s parents passed away in the 1950’s and 60’s; her younger sister Katherine in 2009.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Robert La Cross of Hudson Falls; her son, Michael of Fort Ann; her daughter, Diane Jewell and her husband, Paul of Littlerock, California; three grandchildren, Lisa Jewell Mondoux and her husband, Richard of Rosamond, California, Sean Jewell and wife, Sara of Federal Way, Washington, and Jessica Jewell and her companion, Brandon Greene of San Diego, California; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Ryan Mondoux of Rosamond, California; her brother, James Clough of Maryville, Tennessee; and many nieces, nephews and their families.

Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 6 PM at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 AM on Saturday at St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church, on the park, in Hudson Falls.

Mary (Archard) LaPan

LaPan, Mary obit photoLAKE GEORGE — Mary (Archard) LaPan, 80, formerly of Smith Street, passed away of cancer on Friday, August 26, 2016 at The Pines in Glens Falls.

Born on April 10, 1936 in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Wallace and Pearl (Harris) Archard.

Mary graduated in 1954 from Lake George High School. After graduation, she was employed as a clerk at various businesses in the Lake George area.

Mary was an avid fan of NASCAR and enjoyed watching the Yankees, the team she supported since the 1950s. She purchased her small home in Lake George in 1967, gradually improved it, kept it neat as a pin, and lived there with exceptional thrift. In her illness, she wanted only to return to her “little house in Lake George.”

Mary possessed a strong intelligence, aesthetic sense and memory. She was a source of information about many of the early residents of Harrisena, telling, for example, how her grandfather, Leroy Harris, had an aversion to thunderstorms ever since the 1917 lightning strike that burned his barns, and how her great uncle Clarence Harris humorously showed up to fight a grass fire with a watering can.

In her youth at Harrisena, Mary enjoyed climbing Sugar Loaf Mountain, camping with her family on the Happy Family islands, swimming at Marion Harris’s beach at Kattskill Bay, and spending time with her cousins and best friends Nan and Joyce Harris, whose humorous sayings she would quote decades later. She also recalled visits with her Archard relatives, of Argyle, and kept in touch with them until her passing. She regretted having to miss the recent Archard family reunion.

Besides her parents, her sisters, Patricia Payne and Jean Jackson, her nieces, Cynthia Jackson and Kim Munoz, and her twin brother, Malcolm Archard passed away before her.

Survivors include her son, Wade LaPan of Hudson Falls; her daughter, Michelle Joseph and her husband Ted, of Lake George; her two grandchildren, Jessica Joseph and Joshua Joseph, both of Lake George; her brothers and sisters, Douglas Archard of Newmarket, New Hampshire, Terry Archard of Middle Granville, Sandra Smith of Argyle and Gavin Archard of Bright, Ontario; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Matthew Ryan David

DavidHUDSON FALLS – Matthew Ryan David, 25, of Hudson Falls, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2016, at home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on September 9, 1990, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Douglas David of Glens Falls and Samantha Flexon of Hudson Falls.

Matthew graduated from Hudson Falls High School in 2009 and then attended SUNY Adirondack.

He enjoyed baseball, bowling, fishing, ice skating, tinkering with electronics, coaching Girls Softball Tri County Middle League and he also loved video games.  Matthew had the biggest blue eyes and captivating smile. He was very respectful and could make everyone laugh.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Robert Stevens, Sr.

Survivors include his father, Douglas David and his companion, Marjie Killian of Queensbury; his mother, Samantha Flexon of Hudson Falls; his sister and partner in crime, Gabby Flexon of Hudson Falls; his maternal uncle, Robert Stevens, Jr. and his wife, Karen of Hudson Falls; his maternal aunt, Michele Stevens of Granville; his paternal grandparents, Mary and Abraham David of Glens Falls; his paternal uncle, John David of Glens Falls, Tom David of Clifton Park and Steve David and his wife, Lisa of Clifton Park; his paternal aunts, Kathy O’Brien and her companion, Dan Driscoll of Glens Falls, Linda David of Glens Falls and Jeanne Cunningham and her husband, Bill of Bristol, CT; and several cousins.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, from 3 to 6 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

Immediately following the calling hours, a reception with food and refreshments, celebrating Matt’s life, will be held for friends and family at the Glens Falls Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #81, 32 Cronin Road in Queensbury.

Joan M. Kelly

KellyHUDSON FALLS – Joan M. Kelly, 77, of Pleasantview Drive, went into the arms of the Lord on Thursday, August 25, 2016, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on December 17, 1938, in Newark, NJ, she was the daughter of the late John and Rose (McConike) Fitzgerald.

Joan grew up in Newark, NJ.  Her family then moved to Gansevoort, where she eventually met her lifelong friend, Joan Diamond.   Joan and Joan remained close friends for 63 years, until the day she passed away.

While working at General Electric Co. in Fort Edward, she met her future husband, Philip Kelly.  They were married in September of 1966, in Granville.  Together, they hosted many parties and family gatherings at their home on Pleasantview Drive.  When a dance floor was available at any gathering, Joan and Joan delighted everyone with the jitterbug.   Philip and Joan shared their lives together until his death on January 5, 1998.

Joan’s was devoted to her faith and she made it a part of her life.  She was a communicant of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church and was devoted to saying her Rosary every day.  She was also an original member of the Tiger Tracker Booster Club.  Joan enjoyed watching her sons and grandchildren playing sports.  She was an avid lover of following tennis and especially enjoyed watching Nadal, who was her favorite player.

Joan was a caregiver.  Her purpose in life was to take care of those around her.  She began by caring for her parents, her siblings, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Joan’s love and support will be greatly missed by her family and all those who had the pleasure to meet her.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, John Fitzgerald.

She is survived by her sons, Michael Kelly and his wife, Melonie of Fort Edward and Patrick Kelly and his wife, Roxanne of Hudson Falls; her grandchildren, Caila (Kelly) Shaw, Alyssa Kelly, Jessica Kelly, Bethany Kelly and her boyfriend, Victor Woodworth and her only grandson, Michael Kelly; her great-grandchildren, Alexander Shaw, Patrick Shaw and Gianna Kelly; her siblings, Ron Fitzgerald, Robert Fitzgerald, Linda Cicone, Dian Brow and Judy Ross; and several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her best friend, Joan Diamond of Hudson Falls.

Edith Clara Gaulin

Gaulin, EdityFORT EDWARD – Edith Clara Gaulin, 99, passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016, at her home.

Born on August 13, 1917, in Kingsbury, she was the daughter of the late Clara I. Dennison and Robert J. Andrews.

On June 1, 1936, she married her beloved husband, Donald Gaulin.

She had several hobbies, Edith loved to knit and crochet and was an avid reader (romance novels being her favorite) and loved crossword puzzles.

Later in life, she collected Fenton Glass Bells, Birds and Shoes.  Edith loved her poodles and her cat “Boots”, also nature and watching birds at her many bird feeders.  Growing African violets was also her passion, Edith would fill her home with them.

Edith’s favorite times were spent with her family during weekends at her camp at Hadlock Pond.  Taking long walks around the lake, picking wild flowers with her grandchildren and visiting neighbors were highlights of her weekends on Hadlock.

Edith was also involved with the local fire department, where her husband, Donald was a volunteer for many years, they were faithful to attend many of the events for the fire department.  In her older years, she enjoyed her morning “tea group” at McDonalds.

In addition to her parents and husband, Donald, she was predeceased by her daughter, Elaine Henderson and several brothers.

She is survived by her son, Paul D. Gaulin and his wife, June; her grandchildren, Chris Bazan, Deborah Norton (Kerry), Theresa Brilyea (LeRoy), Bob Bazan (Judy), Daniel Gaulin (Lynn), Tami Lacombe (Rick) and Mary Gaulin; her many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews; also her dear friend, Eleanor Pearson.

The Rite of Committal will be conducted 1 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2016, at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward.

Memorial donations may be sent the animal shelter of your choice.

Shawn M. Dean

ShawnDeanWHITEHALL – Shawn M. Dean, 30, of Whitehall and formerly of Queensbury, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 21, 2016, after struggling with addiction. 

Born February 12, 1986, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Robert Dean, Sr. and Nina Gustafson. 

Shawn was a graduate of Queensbury High School, attended Stony Brook University and a graduate of the Tool and Die Maker Apprentice Program of General Electric.

He was employed by General Electric in Rutland. 

Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Shawn will say that he was the most kind and caring person. An articulate man with so much knowledge to share and always ready to discuss or debate, he was the best person for late night talks. Never too busy to lend a listening ear to those in need, he did all he could to bring a smile to your face. From a very young age it was obvious that Shawn was full of so much love. From saving all the stray animals to his fan favorites in sports (Dolphins and Red Sox) Shawn was always rooting for the underdog. It was not uncommon for him to stop what he was doing to help someone in need. He would help the homeless, pick up hitchhikers, give you the shirt off his back, the food on his plate, or better yet cook you your own. Shawn enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and rock climbing with his friends and family. He found peace and solitude in music, especially Led Zeppelin and Tool. From the time his daughter was a baby he would play his favorite songs for her, the two of them laughing and singing together. Above all, the most important part of his life, his pride and joy, was being a father to his beautiful daughter Cambria. She was the love of his life and he always had the biggest smile whenever she was by his side. She will carry that smile for all that loved him to keep his memories alive in our hearts

 He is predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Irving and Mary E. Dean, Sr.; his maternal grandmother Eunice Clark; and his cousin and work partner, Logan Dean.

 Survivors include Robert Dean, Sr. and his companion, Lucy Elder of Queensbury and Nina Gustafson and his step-father, Warren, of Queensbury; his daughter, Cambria Dean of Queensbury, he is survived by: his companion, Elizabeth Johansson of Whitehall; his grandfather Charles Clark of South Glens Falls; his brother Robert L. Dean, Jr. and his wife, Jennifer of Queensbury; his two sisters: Angela Dean and her companion, Ron Diffee of Fenimore, and Stephanie Dean and her companion, Dave Carletta of Rochester; the mother of his child, Melissa Mapes of Queensbury; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins.

Friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 7 PM at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Monday, at the Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation on Aviation Rd in Queensbury with the Rev. Joseph Busch, pastor, officiating.

The Rite of Committal will follow in St. Alphonsus Cemetery in the town of Queensbury.

Joseph R. Lewis

Lewis, JosephFORT EDWARD – Joseph R. Lewis, 69, of Lower Allen Street, passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2016, at his home.

Born, December 14, 1946, in Glens Falls, son of the late Walter and Agnes (Hall) Lewis.  Walter passed away August 24, 1994 and Agnes passed away September 5, 2005.

Joseph was a Hudson Falls High School graduate where he was an accomplished football player.

He worked for 21 years at Ciba Geigy, formerly in Queensbury and then worked at Finch Pruyn in Glens Falls. He was a member of the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 773.

Joseph enjoyed old TV shows, especially “Leave it to Beaver”.  He liked listening to Johnny Cash and George Jones.  He was a great welder and in his spare time he enjoyed building weight benches for his friends.  Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his beloved grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Joseph is predeceased by two sisters, Patricia McKinney, Mary Ellen Crevision, and a brother, John Lewis.

He is survived by four children, Linda Lewis of Marion and Lisa Lewis of Marion, Christine Lewis of Hudson Falls and Joseph Lewis and his wife, Kimberly of Hudson Falls; his grandchildren, Sean Bukowski, Rebecca Lewis, Bianca Lewis, Allivia Davis Melissa Heers, Melanie Heers; his brothers, James T. Lewis and Jeffrey Lewis; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

A memorial service will follow the calling hours at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations in Joseph’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

 

Clyde E. Smith

QUEENSBURY- Clyde E. Smith, 85, of Queensbury, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2016. 

Born September 18, 1930, in Hudson Falls, he was the son of the late Virgil and M. Lucina “Sine” Smith. 

Clyde was a graduate of Hudson Falls High School and went on to receive his Bachelors and Masters in education at Plattsburg State.  

He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. 

His wife, Shirley (Walker) Smith, passed away in 2005, following 48 years of marriage. 

Clyde taught in the Glens Falls School District for 30 plus years.  

His enjoyments included deer hunting with his buddies, spending time gardening, and reading western books. Most of all, he cherished the time spend with his family, especially his grandchildren. 

In addition to his parents and his wife Shirley, Clyde was predeceased by his sister Joyce Smith and his brother in law David Smith.

He is survived by his children: Gregory Smith and his wife, Michele of Placerville, CA, Cindy Smith of Brookfield, CT, and Alicia Butler and her husband, David of Queensbury; his close family friend, Liz Stabile; his grandchildren: Jessica and Trevor Smith, and Davin and Dylan Butler; his brother and sister in law Leon and Sally Walker; and several nieces and nephews. 

There will be no public services held. At the convenience of the family, the burial will be held at a later date at the Gerald B. H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Schuylerville. 

Memorial donations in Clyde’s name may be sent to the American Lung Association, 155 Washington Ave # 201, Albany, NY 12210, or High Peaks Hospice, 79 Glenwood Ave, Queensbury, NY 12804.

MOREAU – Aileen V. Fuss, 91, of Moreau and formerly of Hudson Falls, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at the Home of the Good Shepherd, following a brief illness.

Born on October 10, 1924, in Queensbury, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rosanna (Mayotte) LaCarte.

In 1951, Aileen married Frederick Fuss at St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls, they spent 52 happy years together, until his death in 2003.

She was employed at General Electric in Hudson Falls until the birth of her children.  Aileen felt very fortunate having been able to stay home and take care of her family. They were the center of her life.  She was a wonderful wife and mother, always putting them first and setting a wonderful example.  They were blessed to have her as a mother.

Aileen was known as “the walker”, although she could jitterbug at 90. Her interests were gardening, crossword puzzles, enjoying the screen porch at her home and her family.   When not sitting on the front porch at the Home of the Good Shephard welcoming visitors and soaking in the warm sun, Aileen enjoyed her sidewalk strolls.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Joyce LaCarte, Lucille Welch, Joan Platt and her brothers, Joseph LaCarte, Jr., and Bernard LaCarte.

Aileen is survived by her children, Joyce Shovah and her companion, Bill Nikas of Queensbury and Hudson Falls; Charles (Katherine) Fuss, of Moreau, Christianne (John) Strough of Queensbury; her grandchildren, Roxanne (Stuart) Rosenberg, Michael Shovah, Catherine (Justin) Beach and John Strough IV; her great grandchildren, Ava Rosenberg, Evelyn Shovah, Henry Beach and Andrew Warner; her “kid sister” Nanette Newell and her “baby brother” John (Phyllis) LaCarte; as well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces,  great nephews and cousins.

Per Aileen’s wishes, there will be no calling hours.

The Rite of Committal will be private at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Kingsbury, at a later date.

Aileen’s family wishes to thank the excellent care she received from the staff at the Home of the Good Shepherd, Moreau Emergency Squad and the compassionate care of Glen Anderson, PA, Hudson Headwaters Health Network.
