HUDSON FALLS – Roger A. Slater, 78 of Hudson Falls, passed away on Wednesday evening, January 29, 2025 at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany.
Born on March 6, 1946 in Granville, he was a life-long area resident and son of the late Westol and Eleanor (Forkey) Slater. Right out of High School, Roger joined the United States Marine Corps where he served honorably for nine years. He then enlisted in the United States Navy where he served until his retirement for a total of 24 years with 2 tours in Vietnam. After he retired, he worked in Uxbridge, Massachusetts managing The Laurel Brook fishing club for over 25 years.
Roger was an outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed word searches, cooking, gardening, and watching the New England Patriots play football. A people person, Roger was very social and really enjoyed volunteering and helping others.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his beloved Wife, Margaret Slater; a daughter, Stephanie Gilbert; sisters, Phyllis Skidmore, Bea Chadwick, and Linda Motto; and two nephews, Larry Slater, Jr. and Keith Galveston.
He is survived by his daughter, Marguerite Newton (Bob) of Hudson Falls; his grandchildren, Sarah Newton (Josh Krywy), Robert Newton, Jr. (Maura), and Nathan Gilbert; great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Layne, Sylas, and Josey; his son-in-law, William Gilbert; his siblings, Larry Slater (Susan Sheldon), Gary Slater (Paulette), David Slater (Joanne), Tommy Slater (Sherry), Mary Mansur (Bolos), and Westol Slater; a sister-in-law, Connie Slater (the late Rick Bello); and many, many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors will be held in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Salem.
