GLENS FALLS – Walter C. Green, 82, of Glens Falls and formerly of Hudson Falls, passed away at the Glens Falls Hospital on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on August 28, 1931, at his family home on Tripoli Road in Kingsbury, he was the son of the late Walter and Elizabeth (Monahan) Green.
Walter began his career as a roofer at Monahan & Loughlin, retiring, after 40 plus years of service. He became a sheet metal worker and a member of the Local #83.
Walter was an avid basketball player. While in high school, he was #5. One of his proudest moments was becoming the scoring champion in the Northern Conference. Sports were a large part of his life. He played for the Green Jackets and was a referee for basketball and played fast pitch softball. Walter was also an avid golfer, a NY Yankee and NY Giant fan.
He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of Glens Falls and Queensbury, Lodge # 81 for many years, where he was active in the Elks Youth Committee. Walter was also a member of the “Chain Crew” for the Hudson Falls Varsity Football Team.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Nims and an infant sister, Helen Green.
Walter is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Jane (Danahy) Green; his son Stephen Green (Linda); his daughter, Patricia Green Hafner (Lee); his grandchildren, Walter Green (Denise), Jennifer Green Kadien (Jerry), William Hafner (Courtney) and James Hafner (Sharon); five great grandchildren, Ashlee, Mary Jane, Stephen, Bentley and Jack; one great-great granddaughter, Jayden; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many wonderful friends.
Friends may call on Friday, August 8, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2014, at St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church on the park in Hudson Falls.
The Rite of Committal will follow at Moss Street Cemetery in the town of Kingsbury. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Gillani, his staff and all the angels on Tower 2, at the Glens Falls Hospital, for all of their compassionate care in helping our dad pass with dignity.
Family and friends are welcome to a celebration of Walter’s life, at his daughter’s home, 87 Crawford Lane in Hudson Falls, following the Rite of Committal.
