FORT EDWARD – William (Bill) Troeber, 97, passed away on January 28, in Vista, CA, with family at his side.
William was born Dec. 18, 1916, the son of William W. and Mabel (Ott) Troeber, in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Bill grew up in Westfield, NJ, graduated from Pingry School, and attended Lafayette College. He played sports in high school and college, including basketball, football, and ran track. Also Bill learned to play the clarinet and saxophone, playing in bands and orchestras.
After college, Bill went to work for the W.T. Grant Company. He was drafted into the U.S Army just before WWII, and served for the “duration,” as he called it. He became a First Lieutenant, working in hospital administration.
While stationed near Washington D.C., he met Fan Waynick. They were married on May 8, 1942. They remained married for nearly 50 years. She passed away in 1992.
After the war, Bill returned to W.T. Grant, Co., working as a manager in around New York and Pennsylvania, before becoming the manager of the newly rebuilt store on Main Street in Hudson Falls.
While in Hudson Falls, he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and The Kiwanis Club, serving as president of the latter. Bill became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hudson Falls, where he served served several terms as a Trustee. He was also a member of the Masons while living in Ellwood City, PA.
In retirement, he enjoyed swimming at the YMCA, playing golf, and visiting family. He served as President of the Wedgewood Retirement Golf League in Fort Edward. He was as an election inspector in the Village of Fort Edward for many years.
Bill enjoyed doing crosswords, listening to big band music, and reading. He also enjoyed watching sports, especially the Knicks, Pirates, and Steelers.
Besides his wife, Bill was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Betty.
Bill is survived by his sons, William Jr. (Bill), and his wife Barbara, of Ruskin, FL, and Jeff, and his wife Karen, of Carlsbad, CA, plus grandchildren Tim Troeber and his wife Brenda, of Long Island, David Troeber, of Newark, DE; Edwin Troeber and his wife Missy, of Port Jefferson, NY; Joanna Troeber Steisel, of West Palm Beach FL; Daniel, of San Marcos, CA; and Nathan, of Carlsbad, CA; a sister, Ruth Batt and her husband Dick, of Gardner, MA; step-sister Patricia Moffit, of Albany; and six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 12, as 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Hudson Falls, with the Rev. Michael Plank, pastor officiating.
A reception will follow at the church.
