NOVI, MI- Henrietta H. Latimer, passed away peacefully, on Friday, September 8, 2017, at St. John Providence Park Hospital, after a brief illness. She had been living in an Erickson Living Community for fourteen years in Novi, MI.
Born, Henrietta Katherine Hubbard on May 15, 1923 in Preston, MD, Caroline County, she was one of four daughters of Mary E. Reynolds Hubbard and Thomas Lawrence Hubbard.
Henrietta lived in Hurlock, MD, Dorchester County during her childhood years and graduated from Hurlock High School in 1940. Henrietta graduated from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1944 and immediately enlisted in the Army Nurse Corp as a 2nd Lt. serving in WWII.
She married Clarence V. Latimer, Jr., M.D. of Deposit, N.Y. on August 1, 1946, having met at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. In 1948 they settled in Hudson Falls, N.Y. where “C.V.” had a family medicine practice from 1948 – 1973.
She was very active volunteering in her local community and co-chaired many school groups and boards. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hudson Falls where she served on many committees including the Women’s Association (as president and trustee), as Sunday school teacher and treasurer and as church secretary. She worked at local bloodmobiles, town and church rummage sales and fund-raising projects. She enjoyed being a Brownie, Girl Scout and Boy Scout Den leader for many years.
She was a member of the Glens Falls Hospital Guild and the Association of Retarded Children, where she was president many times. In 1969 she was named Woman of the Year by the local Business and Professional Women’s Association.
In 1976, Henrietta and C.V. were recipients of the Hudson Falls Chamber of Commerce annual “Flowers for the Living Award” as “a husband and wife team who have made a real impact on our community for the past 27 years”.
During her moves she became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Albany (NY) and the First Presbyterian Church of Farmington (MI).
Her passions, besides family and friends, included: volunteering, sewing, reading, stenciling, traveling, playing bridge, family genealogy, gardening and entertaining.
Henrietta was predeceased by her husband of 54 years; a son, Lawrence Latimer; and sisters, Florence Tarr and Andasia Haglund.
She is survived by her sister, Lucille Hubbard of Novi, MI; daughter, Andasia Latimer (William Soens) of Farmington Hills, MI; and son, Chris Latimer (Patricia) of Rock Hill, SC; three grandchildren: Jordan Soens (Olivia), Westland, MI, Jonathan Soens, Troy, MI, Jay Latimer, Rock Hill, SC; a great granddaughter, Eliana Andasia Soens; and several nieces and nephews.
She donated her body to the Wayne State University Body Bequeath Program. She will be laid to rest in the Moss Street Cemetery, Hudson Falls, NY next to her loving husband.
