HUDSON FALLS – George H. Underwood, 91, of Hudson Falls, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at Glens Falls Hospital, after a brief illness.
Born May 30, 1923 in Queensbury, he was the son of the late Howard and Katherine (Hill) Underwood.
George was drafted in the United States Army during World War II and was very proud to have served his country. He toured in North Africa and marched in Italy, having fought in the Battle of Anzio. George helped liberate Italy and France during the war. He was granted an honorary diploma from Hudson Falls High School because of his extraordinary service to his country.
On August 26, 1948, George married Ruth Annette Story in Hartford. She passed away on July 3, 2008, after 60 wonderful years of marriage. George built the home that he shared with his wife, raised their family and created lifelong memories. He was very proud that he was able to build their family home without a mortgage.
In addition to his parents and wife, George was predeceased by his sisters, Emma Parsons and Katherine Tyminski, and his brothers, Clarence, Charles, Philip, and Ralph Underwood.
He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Underwood of Fort Edward; his sons, Norman Underwood and his wife, Carol, of South Glens Falls, and George Underwood and his wife, Jeannie of Argyle; his grandchildren, Robert Underwood and his companion, Melissa Harvey of Hampton, Erica Thielemier and her husband, John Paul of Arkansas, and Ryan Underwood of South Glens Falls; his great grandchildren, Isabella and Lilianah Underwood, and Darby Thielemier; his brothers, Ernest Underwood, Harry Underwood and his wife, Beverly, and Leo Underwood and his wife, Diantha; his sisters in law, Dorothy Underwood, Lucille Underwood, Barbara (Story) Newton and her husband Thomas, Jane (Vanderwalker) Story and Sarah Jane (Rice) Story; as well as several nieces and nephews
Friends and family may call, Saturday, January 10, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street, in Hudson Falls.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home immediately following calling hours, at 12 p.m., with the Reverend Derek Hansen, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Hudson Falls, officiating.
Burial will be in the spring at Moss Street Cemetery in the Town of Kingsbury.
Donations in memory of George, may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
