TOWN OF MOREAU – Joel R. Barber, 70 of Laurel Road, passed away peacefully, in his wife’s arms on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at his home.
Born on February 12, 1946, in Glens Falls Hospital, he was the third son of the late John R. and Doris Ada (Chadwick) Barber.
Joel grew up on the Vaughn Road in Hudson Falls and was a member of the Hudson Falls High School class of 1963. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Upon being released from active duty in 1968, he furthered his career in the U.S. Navy Reserve, retiring in 1986.
Following his discharge from active duty, Joel began a career in 1970, with the New York State Dept. of Corrections, retiring in 2003 with 33 years of service. After retiring, he went on to work part-time for the Warren County Sheriff’s Dept. as a Security Officer, until his death.
Joel was an avid bowler and bowled on two leagues, one for 40 years and the other for 32. He enjoyed hunting deer in Newcomb at the camp and playing golf. Family was his life. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He spent many hours at their sporting games and doing crazy things with them. Joel also enjoyed boating on Glen Lake on his pontoon boat with his family and friends. After selling the boat, he had a pool installed at the house for everyone to enjoy.
He married his wonderful wife, Linda in 1995. They resided in the Town of Moreau.
Joel was a member in good standing in the Fraternal Order of Eagles of South Glens Falls Post #2486, Adirondack V.F.W. Post #2475, Hudson Falls American Legion Post #574 and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #81.
Besides his parents he was pre-deceased by two brothers, Jack R. Barber and Otis B. Barber.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda T. Barber; his devoted children, Steven and Laura Prouty and their children (Austin and Alexa), also Matthew and Andria Prouty and their children (Evan and Andrew); his sisters in law, Linda J. Barber, Etta Barber and Lynn Chase and her husband, Jim; his special niece, Ashley Hervieux; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street in Hudson Falls.
Fraternal Order of Eagles of South Glens Falls Post 2486 conduct a service at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday during calling hours.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Moss Street Cemetery in the town of Kingsbury.
In lieu of flowers, Joel’s family requests that memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
To Joel’s family I am very sorry to hear the news of his passing. I worked with Joel for many years at Mt. Mc Gregor. He was a class act guy and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

When Linda married Joel the whole Abare family knew he was special. We could see that he was a loving, caring husband and stepfather. He soon became one of our favorite cousins.
