On behalf of the USS Terrebonne Parish (LST 1156) Association, heartfelt condolences to Sandy and all family members on the passing of our former shipmate. Gary served on board the LST 1156 as a Yeoman in the ship’s office from 1954 to 1956. He had also been a member of our ship’s association for several years and joined us for our Seventh Reunion held in Norfolk in 2009. He was a good friend and embodied all that a shipmate should be. He will be deeply missed by all former crewmembers and Association members. May he be blessed with Fair Winds and Following Seas.
My condolences to Sandy and all family members on the passing of Gary. I served with Gary on the USS Terrebonne Parish (LST 1156). I have fond memories of the good times that we shared together on board ship and also on shore leave. He was a good shipmate and served his country well during his military service. We re-connected after many years thru the ship’s reunion association, and I was fortunate to have been in contact with him during the past several years and to have also spent some time with him at our 2009 reunion in Norfolk. It was good to have seen him again, and we were able to reflect upon our many shared experiences on board ship. Those were special times and I will treasure those times and the memories that we shared. He was a kind and caring person and devoted to Sandy while on board ship, as he was in later years. Fair Winds and Following Seas, Mate. I will miss you.
My heart goes out to Sandy and all the Benson family. I was very sadden to hear of Gary’s passing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and could take it as good as he could give it, that’s what I loved most about him of the time that I had the pleasure of knowing Gary. My heart especially goes out to Lori, I am so sorry for your loss. I will always treasure the times we have spent with Gary, especially when Sandy and Gary came to visit us in Vermont on a camping trip and we cooked dinner on the fire, that was a great time. Gary you will be missed by everyone you touched.
Love Brendon
